New Prime Minister's Promise to the People.

It is a good and imaginative speech full of promises. Let's us hoped they will be carried out promptly to address problems posted in this forum. However, there was no mention of intention to lower costs or change the pro-foreign and pro-talent policies which caused some difficulties to the economy.
Any views and comments on this ? -
Its more of a motivating-sarport me kind of speech instead of more specific promises of what he will be doing next.
And worse, i sense he is trying to show a lot of soft side of him in this speech... -
more will be said at that end of the mth thing lah....then we will really know what changes he have in mind...

When an organization looks from the top, the problems on the ground look very small.
The speech seems to be of the same nature.
Previous Ex-PM's speeches were of the same nature as well.
How could people's problems be solved if leaders don't mingle and live with the people who could not make ends meet due to high costs.

that was one of the worst speech by a PM that I've ever heard... with all the mispronunciations... isn't it also obvious he's having some kind of stage fright when you see him squirm when trying to break a smile... its so artificial... not the slightest bit warm and genuine...
sorry... but I still cannot picture him as our good leader... I can only hope he doesn't go screw up everything we've created and fought so hard for... just like how he had by going to Taiwan and pissing the Chinese off, just before taking over....

Its kinda weird and unrealistic for a PM to be as benevolent like a Buddha. -

Historical perspective seems to be so as stated. Drafting speech is simple job lah, just write what the people want to hear lor......it is the execution that is difficult. Lets wait for the action. I dun tin he will want to lower cost.... He wans his government to learn more money from Singaporeans.... Maybe he will further increase the tax???

Forumites are bringing up the high-cost issues by all available venues. May be there is a need to be patient and support one another. LHL did not say he would not attend to these problems so we need to give him an opportunity to do so as stated by 2004Lancer. -

Hey, I dunno if you guys notice, but ever since rumours went around that LHL is "harsh, rigid and dun understand the people", there was a huge campaign to "show his softer side"...
Like the CNY day news to wish the people well, joking with the people... etc...
Seems rather forced and staged.
Personally, I think LHL is a highly intelligent man, good leader and he learnt from the best... but I still prefer Mr Goh. -

Tonight's TV news reported LHL comments that he chose to touch on people issue in his inauguration speech and not policies or economic issues. He added that people already knew about government's policies.
Well said. But will he soon announce changes to old policies that cause high costs and loss of economic competitiveness.
If there is no such changes to fundamentals in his administration we can only assume that he will be an extension of the past administration. That will mean more fee increases and more suffering for the lower-strata of society.
It will mean that there will be more discontent among people affected by high costs and the poor will get poorer. Is such a life worth living for most of the people who are disadvantaged?
GLCs are doing well now. Even government-protected public transport companies like Degro-Comfort are making good profits this year negativing government's assumption that they should be entitled to gradual fare adjustments to give good service. Town councils are protected in the same way.
Isn't it time to admit there has been boo-boo in past high cost policies and put a stop to further fee increases which might lead to profiteering. It will be double standard to ask pilots to lower salaries but support Town council's high pay and high fees. What are your views dear all. -

Seriously, I dun see much change in the cabinet.
What is already in the cabinet are already causing havoc.
The Gov Inc. will carry on to profit on the common people to sustain their millionaire lifestyle.
Please dun expect any wonders since the same batch of pple are still holding power.
They just change the leader, that is all.
The ceremony conducted on 12th Aug night have guest appearance of Fann Wong and Zoe Tay along with Mr Lee.
So, it is a clear sign of what the media is standing.
Dun forget that the people are paying for the "simple" ceremony.
We can shout and shout, but the voices will not be "heard".
As some of the people in the forum have pointed out, the new cabinet are comprise of pple from good family background.
So, I dun actually expect them to empathise with the common people.
If you are retrenched, just upgrade.
Then, you realised that what you have "upgraded'' is actually useless to the job market as you are too old to be employed.
So, you will end up being a cleaner or rubbish clearer.
The gap will carry on to be widen between the elite and the common.
Just wonder there will be any CPF $$$ left after I retired ?
It may just be used as a "financial" fund for CHina or INdia
