sigh, we singaporeans quite full of ourselves. the china chinese criticised us, we say thats becos the china chinese this and that, the taiwanese wanna boycott us, we say thats becos the taiwanese this and that. have u all ever wondered maybe we singaoreans are the ones collectively at fault, that we can piss so many ppl off? instead of going on the defensive, why not think about it? not that we have to please everyone or anyone, but for ever reaction, there is a cause, and the question is, what about us that creates such a cause? think people, dun just blindly and mindlessly go on the defensive again.

It is easy to form our impressions on taiwan by looking at their media, parliament and even movies as a gauge to how they are like when it comes to defence and strategic issues.
it is true that they make their parliament out to be a joke and their movies stupid but they have survived longer than we had as a nation and with a bigger threat for a longer time. it could really be just pure sensationalism how they reacted to Lee's visit but as some of u pointed out, they have less and less friends. if someone is cornered a country that is supposed to be your 'friend', i.e. u have been playing host to for many years say what Lee said, it only increases their sense of isolation. Whether it is mere sensationalism or not, it does spell a threat to taiwan if Singapore really meant what it said about Taiwan. we should'nt read them as being drama-mama. their sense of threat is definitely greater than how we feel about the china-taiwan issue.
let us not be too critical of the taiwanese, less we find that one day we are trapped between two unfriendly countries and we need friends from afar to affirm our independence too.
if political leadership has been a little more astute, it would have recognised that both China and taiwan would have used our visit for political mileage. we can't really blame them for being hyper-sensitive given the historical baggage the two coutnries carry since we are not them and don feel it. we should have been more astute to prevent what we cannot solve. -
my mum is a taiwanese, i was born there, i served my NS in singapore now holding a pink IC.
In my impression, taiwan is a much more democratic society than most SEA countries. Yes, the parliament is a joke, the media is sentationalizing most news, but wait till you see the news in China (i am base in shanghai now), then you might prefer taiwan news.
As someone who worked in the media industry before, i must say this, if it is shown on TV as news, don't believe it wholesale...even if its CNN. taiwanese are some of the most warming people i have met.
