Why does Singapore have a copy-cat flag?
I mean why choose RED and WHITE for the national colours when red and white actually are the colours representing Indonesian nationalism ?
The Malaysians copied the Red and White and used it as the UMNO colours, so that the UMNO flag is a Kris with a Red and White background. According to Nordin Sopee, a Malaysian scholar, Red and White represented malay nationalism in Malaya.
So why is Singapore also getting into the same bed? It is all the more confusing when it is impossible to differentiate the Indon flag from the Spore flag from a distance.
Somebody must have conned the PAP leadership back in 1959 to adopt this flag. Maybe this guy wanted Singapore to fall into Indonesia's orbit.
It's time to update the flag..........ok? -

A nation's flag is not like a piece of apparel that we can change as and when we like it, is it?
Anyway, I noticed that alot of countries have red in their flags. And most of the flags revolve around the same colors - white, green, red, yellow, blue.
Why doesn't anyone use PINK... or PURPLE or ORANGE?

The Japanese Flag has only one dot. That is a virtue of simplicity which also means a lot.
Instead of having so many stars, one small red dot may be better. People will see nothing and want to see more.

U think the Indo flag is original ? He also follow the flag of austria since austria also has a red and white stripes... followed by another red stripe... From a distance anyone can see tat the indo flag follows the austria flag. So they r copy cat ? Do they idolise the austria as their master, otherwise why copy their flag ? There r lots of flags tat only has the color red and white. England, Austria, Japan, Indo, Bahrain, Denmark, Greenland, Honk Kong, Northen Cyprus, Peru, Switzerland, Monaco...
Wait... Monaco is totally identical to indonesia flag ! So who is copying who ? Scully next time Monaco win an Olympic gold and indonesia thought he is from indo since the flag is the same !

Com'on... the design of singapore flag is unique on its own. Red and white r some of the colours tat were most popular with flag making. Lots of country use just red and white for the design of their flags. Indo flag certainly can't be older than flags from england or austria isn't it ? So indo flag is a copy cat and has to change ? -

You actually answered your own question. The design of our flag (colours & symbols) were deliberately choosen for "political" reasons. The thinking reflected the sensitivities of the times. The idea was to be "all inclusive".Originally posted by idwar:Why does Singapore have a copy-cat flag?
As to whether we should change our flag ... well, I personally see no need to do so today.
As a country, we have already established a "reasonable" international standing and our flag is recognised ... however the design was arrived at and whatever the original reasons behind its design.

actually the malaysian flag is based upon the stars and stripes of the United States of America
