Is Singapore becoming Chinapore?

Ever felt like "eh, wait a minute. Did i take a plane and am i in china now?"
Looking around me, there are so many China compatriots. Is it really necessary? Look at our jobs that they've taken. I went for a sales engineer job interview and had a long chat with me, and shared this wisdom: these foreigners (mostly China-chinese and India-indians) are almost always getting the jobs from the locals, especially in technical jobs because they have lower salary expectations, they (may be) more skilled technically, and they can't communicate so effectively with the rest of the populations (singaporeans).
Tell me your view, is it necessary to import talents by the masses? Are we going to lose our Singaporean identity soon?
I did some research on the internet. Turns out that Singapore has a very high net migration rate. Even higher than (so called) dream destinations such as Australia, US, Canada. Now is it really necessary? -
yup, such is the double-edged nature of our free economy. just like some years back, american car companies who actually manufactured and packaged cars in Detroit USA were complaining Honda was stealing their business. well, at least we can take comfort we are sharing the same problems as the strongest economy in the world. our local engineers can never match china/india talent for salary. we'll starve if we did. like you suggested above, our only assets to survive are communications skills, familiarity with region and business culture, net-working etc. don't expect our government to lend any help in this matter. they're more interested in foreign investments. we are on our own.Originally posted by foxwalk:Ever felt like "eh, wait a minute. btw, it'd be great if you can land a job as sales engineer. it's more interesting and exposes you to various sectors especially if your company's into industrial appliances and instrumentation. sales engineer is also a local's best bet when up against china/india talent compared to say design / systems engineer -
that why LHL encourage us to born more babies..
but there are something not truth in the LHL speech.
they say china also facing the problem of babies population drop, but he forget china had 1.3b population.
dont know te actual figure..let say 10,000,000 of baby born each yr.
5% is talent, mean 500,000. and 5 % willing to come singapore as singapore had higher pay compare to china..there will be 25k of baby coming singapore each year.
so what do you think. -
i do not mind foreign talents from India or China. But the fact is that i hav came across lots of them, only 1 out of 10 can really performs. The rest all Pian Siao wan...."keng and keng".
Hope local employers select foreign talents carefully. As the saying goes: 'Cheap things don't come good; Good things don't come cheap' -
indeed singapore is becoming chinapore. ask around some of your property agent friend. more and more china ppl are looking and buying HDB flats. look around you if happen to stay in HDB blocks. you will find many china couples staying near you.
im not against china nor indians. but i just hope singapore company can give priority to singaporean when looking for a job, especially if we can match them in terms of skill andperformance.
now even govt sector have many foreign talents. sigh....

We should adopt Australia's system of selecting foreigners for employment.Their entry is given priority based on a existing job offer.And they have stringent rules which outline that only if an Australian citizen cannot be found for this aprticular, then and only then are you allowd to employ a foreigner.This foreigner , before entry , if he wants to achieve PR status, has to undergo a eligibility test based on many different criteria, e.g education, qualifications, relatives, skills, language spoken etc..Their entry requirements are openly displayed under their Immrigation Agency's website.It's interesting to note that our immigration system does not do much to filter out the trash and instead of really genuine talent, much of our immigrants do work which you and I can do.Immigration for the mere sake of population is a short-term measure and it does not mean that a larger population will make the economy stronger, especially if there are five competitors for one single job.The other four will suffer from over abundance of the same skills and are not matched for any other job.Re-training these four will introduce another time-lag element which taxes our already dead economy, because the majority of the other sectors are definitely not growing.

lots of company hired them cos sometime no one wan to do the jobs.. so even they keng.. wat to do?
anyway, i think more and more companies know the pros and cons of hiring all these china & indian workers...
we should buck up more to show that we have better quality than them -

Dunno leh. We got incoming Sg idol, we've got lots more us concerts here, having us idols brought over, lots of stuff. I remember one of SG's initial forward plans in 2000, making sg another las vegas lol. We even got pink dolphins captured here.
