racial harmony?

the government had been stressing on racial harmony since 40 yrs ago. however, how harmonious is it?
in the older generation, i can still see some interaction between diff races, but in my student generation, there is hardly any interaction. from what i can see in my sch, most of the non-chineses students are in the normal stream and, sad to say, many are in some secret societies. i believe this is the same case in other schs. therefore, we chinese in the express stream seldom or nv mix with them. the most we mingle with the non-chinese in the same stream and those in the same cca.
this is why some of the chinese students in my sch are racists(against the non-chinese). they did not like the idea of gov giving the non-chinese free education, although they need to pay now, but most of them are in normal stream. also they hate the non-chinese creating havoc in the sch.
from this events, this shows singapore is in crisis of another racial riots, perhaps not now, but in yrs to come. perhaps the gov can do more about it by focusing more on us younger generation. or else, history will repeat. -
In this case, i strongly disagree about "hardly any interaction". In my school, i can see malays often communicate with chinese. i don't see any reason why there is any difficulty. During lessons like Physical Education, i can see my malay friends enjoying themselves with the chinese students. It's the same for me. I like to talk to my malay friends. They got different views on different matters. And most of the time in school, i can malays chatting or playing with chinese students. Personally, i experience this too! My malay friends in the art class like to joke and play soccer with chinese classmates. We did not have difficulty in communicating to each other. althought i feel more comfortable to mix with my own chinese..but overall still okie. if you think chinese and malay are getting more and more far apart, the problem is with you, they dislike those ppl who think themself as [high-class] singaporean. so from the understanding of your thread, you seen to be one.

I like to see every one in singapore do well regardless of whether they are chinese or not. I mix with everyone ...who cares what their race is. Inside our blood is all red....everyone need a heart to beat in order to stay alive. I will still look after singaporeans overseas as well , because they are my countrymen! As long as they are singaporeans , I WILL SUPPORT THEM 100%!

why did some of our fellow singaporeans is paying half of the school fees since we chinese have to pay the full amount of our school fees during our primary and secondary schools time? Its a miracle to see they also can have so many children when we have to slog and and slog in order to have only 1 or 2. And they like to shield their fellow bros and sisters too( for those who have been to the army) i believe you would have observe that. unless there is some institutions that has been backing them. i'm not creating dissent here but i jus stating the facts.

Our country cant progess with we are not unite and move forward together. If there is an underclass or community that is lagging behind, we should help them.
Education is the key to progess and fight against proverty. The current policy is a good one for the community to help themselves. I hope they will continue to improve and do better in future. -
Like I said ...they must be singaporean then I support them 100%

i believe we are not racist but we do feel more comfortable hanging out with our own color. just ask ourselves this question.
how many of us go out date a indian or malay friends out for a movie, nite out together?
how many times do you dine with your indian or malay friends?
do malay and indians too tend to hang out in their own group?

i study in an above-average neighbourhood sch. i assume national education is part of the civil and moral education(CME). u believe that by having national education will result in a stronger bond in diff races? u're too naive. just stating the facts, most of the students treat the national education as a subject that is worse than music or pe.Originally posted by paperchicken:Which school are you from ? North side got a lot of Malay. I think they hit max HDB quota over here. See a lot of Malays here everyday.

i agree with reyes and i believe we should adopt a healthy skeptic and an observant and positive attitude. I would suggest be very very tactful in handling these issues. Its is the lack of understanding of sensitivity issues that led to those racial riot in those days.I'm sure we are too brainy to repeat the same mistakes again like they did.
and i'm sure anyone would'nt want to see a 9-11 in spore too.
i dun think there is any high class or low class ppl in spore. it jus the mentality and the attitude. we are a democratic country we do have our own personal preference to who we are with -to- what we want to eat. They too can have their places of worship anywhere and time to go worshipping too.
Attitude and mentality is crucial to everybody in this world. It is of this problem that i could see why our neighbouring countries isn't growing and the conflict in palestine-israel, iraq - kuwait, bosnia -sebia , us-iraq war, osama (where he could be a better person by not killing and go be a entrepenuer or something he could be proud of) is not getting any better.

I am proud to be Singaporean.Above all others,I hate racists.I may have Chinese blood,Indian blood and Portueguese blood,but I am above all proud of my Singaporean roots.
I honestly couldnt' care less about race.To me,different races are an ethno-cultural-linguistic product.Take for example the many stories of Chinese raised by Malay families in Singapore.Biologically,their heritage may be North East Asian,but to themselves,they see themselves as Malay.When you are in love with a woman,her race wouldn't matter to you.
I see racial harmony ever other day.My father is Chinese but my mother is Indian with some distant Portueguese blood.They have remained married for 20 years.I know of Indian friends with Chinese girlfriends,of Chinese friends with Australian girlfriends.
Ironically,living in Australia,while I have heards of racism by white people against others,I have never personally experienced it.Instead,any racism I have ever experienced has come from my fellow Chinese,because of my mixed blood.I know both racial harmony and racial tension,and I can tell you,while opposing many of the government's policies in principle,I cannot argue with the results of their past policies as it has helped greatly in reducing racial hatred and suppressing and removing much racial tension.While racial tension still exists in Singapore,in my personal experience,it is minor. -
