Would anyone believe there's slavery in the supposed 1st world economy Singapore?
Well, there's and even worse.
There's a group of people who have to work 7 to 8 hours for their masters for nothing everyday. What's worse than slavery is that they even have to pay their masters when they couldn't work!
These are the cabbies.
Typically, a taxi driver without any partner will have to drive for 7 to 8 hours each day to pay for the taxi rental. Only thereafter, when he is all tired out with productivity dropped, is he able to drive to get some income for himself.
When he falls ill and couldn't drive, he still has to pay the taxi company the cab rental.
Understandably, as a slave he has no welfare or any medical benefits.
He is also expected to perform the extra duties of people like porter, medics, etc with no additional charge.
When the big and rich airline companies were allowed to impose fuel surcharge during the oil hike, the slave had to absord the extra cost.
So folks, if this isn't slavery, then what else is?
Maybe it could be "mafiaism"?
Some of them have too little education and are in their 40s and 50s, who would want to hire them?Originally posted by burntan:Then don't be a taxi driver lah.

Why do you compare a taxi driver to that of a slave? Its an insult to taxi drivers. Being a taxi driver is like being an entrepreneur. In buisness, there is bound to be losses arising from poor sales and stiff competition. If a taxi driver has been consistently losing money, I believe it would be wise of the taxi driver to either devise a strategy or adapt to the competitive environment of the buisness. If the taxi driver is unable to do any of the following, then it would be wise for him to withdraw from the buisness and call it a day. Slavery and Buisness are two different subjects.Originally posted by raihanraihan:wow such things still happen!

Even if these people have received more education, I wonder what difference will it make to their lives.Originally posted by 01024G:Some of them have too little education and are in their 40s and 50s, who would want to hire them?
