By and large, Queen's English or American English cannot be differentiated through writing. If recipient cannot understand posting, it not mean senders cannot send but it mean recipient cannot receive. Recipient needs change.
I am not talking about "ACCENTS", but proper use of the parts of the English.
Now, having said all that, I am NOT against the use of writing Singlish, (which I am guilty of occasionally).
As I'd said, writing trivial notes about bf/gf, liking of milk, the time we take to pee, etc can be in Singlish for all i care. It is sometimes extremely humourous when reading such compositions.
However, if the forum topic is on something serious, attempting to glean through a very very long passage filled with spelling and grammatical error is extremely tedious.
I fully understand that such a forum brings together a wide spectrum of individuals with varying levels on the command of the language. you can always point the mistakes out to the poster - and hope that he/she learns from it. this would certainly be more productive and consensual than keeping quiet and going somewhere else to lambast the author.

We can only assume that everyone accepts criticism and comments about our writing. I have, on previous occasions, attempted to persuade a couple of writers to at least spell uncommonly used words properly, but such attempts are usually rebutted with the comments that "why others can understand, you cannot??"
I do agree with you, however, on the point that "unintelligible topics are just their own pitfall".
However, it is still left to the writer on how he wants to communicate his message. I am just agreeing with the topic starter that: Yes, the standard of English is not as high as it should be, but in some occasions it is acceptable, but in other occasions, perhaps a like care and skill is required. If anyone feel insulted by my comments, I apologise. -
As long as the essential points and ideas gets thru, why should we be over particular?
This is a forum, not a grammer school.

no lah! most ppl wan to speak proper english oso cannot one. its not like they can switch here switch there like change underwear like tat. not everybody can switch to proper english in one second ok. no good means no good. can only speak singlish. u want them to stoptalking altogether meh? all become dumb? or all speak dialect or malay/tamil only? cannot right! cannot tell people to shuddup.

I reckon speaking and writing Singlish is fine, but it will become a problem if it overshadows the fundamentals. The reason why Singlish has become a problem is because people are starting to write in Singlish when decent English is supposed to be written.

Personally, I make every effort to write in presentable English here, though I sometimes allow some typos to slip through.
But as for your concern about the command of written English here and in Singapore generally, I'd say like most would say; " Where got time, lah! You can read, I can read, can oredi lah!"
As illustrated, writing in proper ( or presentable ) English takes effort, which is basically practice, and habit.
The ability to switch between the two, English and Singlish, is key to this particular issue at hand. -
Fully agree! my english is no good so i always try to write in presentable english. I need to take time to practise proper english. BUT, singlish is a singapore culture being evolved. Don't kill it. On this forum, I think only those who write long thesis on political ideologies, or those who are in heated exchanges of different and complicated ideas need to use proper english. The rest, write singlish please.
