Chinese or Singaporean

Sometimes I think I am Chinese....
Then at other times, I think I am singaporean......so damn the Chinese, Damn the Chinese language.....damn the China people..........damn Chinese traditions....damn everything chinese.......
Then I go back and I think I am Chinese again....... -
always felt Singaporean more than Chinese....
never thought of myself as Chinese when at work.. just that i cannot speak Malay and leave that to my Malay colleagues and that they cannot speak Chinese so they leave that to me
apart from that, we just get along without thinking "Chinese", "Malay", "Indian" or whatever -
i don't feel like i'm a singaporean or a chinese... how?

strangely, although i call myself singaporean and feel more singaporean than chinese, i feel a little out of place..
somewhat as if, i don't really belong here.. yet.. i've never felt belonged anywhere....
i felt i belonged once.. but it was an illusion...

i usually don't think of myself as a chinese, unless its another one of those anti-jap arguements again, or anything else that forces me to stand up to state that i'm chinese

Err I think of myself this way:
Race: Chinese
Citizen: Singaporean
However, in terms of traditions and values, I'm really not very chinese (mandarin suks, can hardly speak dialect, don't listen to chinese songs or watch chinese shows/movies. Chinese traditions?? Besides CNY, my family does not celebrate any other kind. BFs??? Either non-chinese or they're like me; they grew up on potatoes) Kinda like a banana if you wanna think of it in those terms. Yellow on the outside, white in the inside.
So what does that make me? Cosmopolitan? I don't know -
Why not the other way round? Instead of not belonging to anything, you belong to everythng. You are Chinese. You are Singaporean. You are an Asian. You are a citizen of the world.
Isn't it better to celebrate what we have in common with other people, then to try to be different (sometimes can be mistook for being aloof). -

Fully agree. need to make the diff between citizenship and race. Also, it is what others see us, not what we claim ourselves to be. Give up Singapore citizenship and migrate to US, you are then not singaporean anymore. Not many singaporean want to admit many of us are banana!
Many may want to think they are citizen of the world, but don't use singapore passport then they don't go anywhere outside singapore!!If the world don't recognise them as citizen then their self-proclaimed world citizenship has no meaning.
The world want to know about islam because of 9/11, want to learn about Chinese because of the 1.3 millions are coming out into the world. The Malays in Singapore are explaining and showing the world that Islam is not terrorism. While recognising the importance of China, the HK chinese make sure that people know they are different from those Chinese in Guangzhou, even though both speak the same cantonese. Of course the loud mouth Taiwanese also make sure that they are not mistaken as mainland chinese. Unfortunately many Singaporean are not even able to tell the difference between Chinese singaporean and Mainland Chinese, to the extent of feeling that may be chinese singaporean are not chinese at all.

I didn't say I want to be white nor am I trying to model myself after them. Just that the background I grew up in results in what I am today.
I agree I had Ang Mo bfs but not all of them are white either. There are Asian guys as well, just of different races or nationality. -

i am chinese. i have a chinese name. i eat chinese food at home. i speak chinese + lousy dialect with my grandparents. i look chinese. i have yellow skin. i can write chinese. i got a1 in chinese. i got chinese calligraphy on my walls at home. my father say must be proud to be chinese.
so i am chinese.
but i am singaporean. i mutter the anthem every morning. i yawn the pledge during the morning. i hate to write and learn chinese. i especially hate higher chinese. i sometime crave for western food than chinese food. i don't like china people, but i respect china for my roots.
thus i am singaporean with singapore idiosycrasies too.
thus with this unique mix. i am singaporean chinese. -
