But income tax is fixed... Raise GST, maybe...Originally posted by kops21:If the govt don't get their forecast earning from COE/ERP, they will find other means to get it.
There are 2 things in life that we can't escape. Death & taxes.
1st point noted - thank you. will implement soonOriginally posted by Qitai:ASo, in fact, I want them to jack up the ERP price and SCRAP the COE.
x 2Originally posted by Qitai:Actually, this is exactly what I want - MORE COE. As for the gantry. No problem for me, I don't go downtown that often. Have always been wondering why I have to pay the COE when there is no traffic jams in where I want to go.
So, in fact, I want them to jack up the ERP price and SCRAP the COE. I want my car without paying that bloody COE + 131% tax. I can accept higher ERP and more gantry if it makes traffic smoother.
Take public transport. Then you may get better services as buses and train operators can earn more moneyOriginally posted by paperchicken:Less COE ppl complain More COE ppl also complain. Take taxi lah.![]()
Can you stop your trumpet blowing for Democracy? There is already a topic for that. Traffic Jams are much much worst in the democractic countries.Originally posted by robertteh:Minister Mah Boh Tan in announcing COE system many years ago has informed the public that when it and the ERP were introduced, vehicle registration, import and excise duties eventually will be scrapped.
Has the government fulfilled its promise to do so? For those who are still doubting the wisdom of democracy or alternative views, think again.![]()

You confirmed that the tax rate was not scrapped as it should have been as promised. It was merely reduced slightly from 171% to 131% to retain the vehicle tax.Originally posted by Qitai:Anyway, I hate helping the government on this topic. But you just made me want to do this. The tax rate did decrease from 171% to 131% and the COE quota increased. I think that is not enough though.
No disagreement with that. I am still waiting for them to keep their words of reducing tax and COE when they introduce ERP. That is why I wanted them to jack up ERP and scrap the COE and vehicle tax. There is progress, but not as fast as I would like it to be.Originally posted by robertteh:You confirmed that the tax rate was not scrapped as it should have been as promised. The logic given in introducing COE and ERP, was that it would be the fairest way to control congestion as compared with direct vehicle taxes. COE and ERP were held as the best pricing mechanism for road usage. Why was this logic not that logical after all and vehicle taxes were retained despite the promise or logic given about COE or ERP? Should policy maker not honored their logic so given?
This retention of vehicle taxes even at reduced amount actually amounts to a double taxation.![]()

Do you need to be rich to own a car? NoOriginally posted by Qitai:Who is the one selfish here?
You just want to keep the car ownership an exclusive right for the rich, didn't you? Issuing more COE gives more people ability to own a car, what's wrong with that?
And don't you want your smooth traffic still when you go downtown? And if the ERP solves that, why not? Afterall, if the COE and tax gets reduce, you are just back to square one while allowing others who do not go downtown to still have their car and drive it in the neighbourhood.
So, who is the one selffish here?
Dispatch rider? Company can pay for it.Originally posted by Gazelle:Do you need to be rich to own a car? No
Do you need to be rich to own a Ferrari or a Mercedez? Yes
Just because you dont travel to CBD, therefore you are saying that ERP is good. Isnt that a selfish statement? What about dispatch riders? what about taxi drivers? what about the deliver guy who have to make 10 trips to downtown everyday? Are those people suppose to suffer while you get to enjoy?
Just because you dont go downtown, that doesnt mean that everybody should be like you. be fair, be considerate. Singapore is now just about you.
Toopid singaporean. If everyone has a car then the roads will be jam pack with them. Just look at Bangkok.Originally posted by Gazelle:Selfish Singaporean...
