You know what annoys me? When some girls make light of NS, as if it was some kind of cakewalk. I don't think grumbling excessively about NS is exactly justified but try two years of rigementation, restricted freedom and doing dumb things in the full knowledge that it will mostly come to naught, while seeing the world speed on ahead without you as well as the fact that
When it comes to crunch time, you are expected to die for some unapperciative civillians, some of who never even learnt to cook or wash their own clothes but sit on their ivory towers making statements about how NS is so "easy" and all about sleeping, I suggest you go try.
But then again, what do people who have been civillians their whole lives know about being soldiers? Do they know about the countless hours we spent sleep-deprived in some mudhole in the middle of the night in Tekong on a weekend while our friends are having some celebration on the mainland?
Have they seen the people who are forced to leave troubling issues back home because they have to serve only to return to them when they book out? Have they seen the injuries able bodied persons in their prime have recieved, some crippled, some even losing their lives? Have they felt the agonizing loniness? The physical and mental torture? The feeling of being blasted way out of your comfort zone? The feeling of being the village idiot and trying to snatch a few hours of borrowed heaven when we book out for the weekend? Why? Because they have to keep Singapore safe and credible, so as to allow the existence of the very soceity you are now decrying them from, so unless you have being right there and there with our soldiers, I suggest you think twice before saying so crassly that NS is a waste of time and a cakewalk. Thank you. -
