actually, i pity those involved in the SATS cut ....
employees who moved over only maintained their benefits for the next 18months, etc etc.
sounds like a move or get moved OUT kinda situation to me ... purely my opinion -
Corporate decisions are like that... gotta be swift and decisive.
The farce abt the recent merger of the two Tee V stations too brought abt much anxiety to those invloved. -
the govt has taught us well and made us sensible citizens
in some countries, moves like this will immediately cause uproars, protests, strikes......
but we swallow our pride and accept it as our fate for the better of the bigger economic picture.....
jobs are lost here but jobs are created elsewhere.....it's a tough time for the ppl but it's time for the ppl to learn how vulnerable we are.....especially when we are challenged by the economic and social factors in the whole region..... -
SIA's case is not a good example in this case. SIA IT Department only handles the internal systems like revenue accounting, reservation and departure control system. Airline is a delicate industry, will outsourcing reduced the overall safety and quality of machine parts since majority of the projects will have to go on the cheap? Will the companies outsourced provide adequate knowledge and skills such delicate projects?
Anyway, on the subject of IT outsourcing, it really depends on what type of system we are talking about. IT industry has grown to be a huge industry now with various field any one person can specialized in. I would compare that to the engineers where you have civil engineers, mechanical, electrical, electronics, avionics etc... IT industry can be classified into software programmers, hardware, web design, system artitecture, Database administrators etc..
For some aspect of IT industry, it makes full sense to outsource since some software do not need to be re-invented when there are specialised software company who will create the software and sell it worldwide. For example, data mining/reporting software is a very common application that many cooperation requires. It does not make sense to have each company developing their own data mining software. On the other hand, there may be unique softwares that only a certain company needs and in this case, internal development might make more sense. So, it really depends on the situation whether outsourcing is logical. -

You mean after outsourcing and causing fellow citizen to become jobless, they will reduce the tax or stop implementing GST increase? They did and they added the Industrial Act to balance up between trade unions and industries and some incentives with the use of federal and state funds to support some large industries, if I am not wrong. However they are still keen to keep jobs and other goodies for australians first. If less critical government tasks are outsourced to the private sector, economy may pick up as businesses will get a fillip.
Not only outsourcing to local businesses will help the economy to pick up particularly in the SME sector, it will save billions of high wage costs for the people. May be with such saving, there will be no necessity to increase utility fee, Town council charges and transportation costs.
Outsourcing to overseas countries is another issue altogether. Government should look after its citizens and should not outsource its works to overseas companies.
Have a referendum. This kind of policy including opening the doors to foreign talents without careful safeguards to protect Singaporeans' jobs will be voted down by the people.

what i can say after some observation is that the top management has been misled that outsourcing can keep spending and job lean......actually the whole idea is to open up Singapore Information Systems to spy agencies......this is just my guessing as IT is usually outsourced to those big MNC.....that's why i say we are opening our doors to foreign spy agencies.....
and since when our 5-day work week has become so stressful and intensified that at the end of the week we have become so shagged than before......
one good case is yesterday suicide case of a 33-yr-old Customer Service Rep who lived at SengKang.......and the big news of LTA man who also committed suicide due to work stress...
Think the future road ahead is we are going to see more people jumping down MRT tracks, jumping from HDB flats, etc.....
If the current outsourcing goes on and if working environment becomes leaner plus more stressful than before, more will die......
We will see more suffering......*sigh*...........
Also the latest Lady-Taxi driver case who was believed to be killed and believed to have owed $50000. -
A friend of mine works for SIA and was involved in the recent retrenchment exercise, though he wasn't senior enough to make the decisions. somehow he was caught in between the disgruntled workers and the mgt...being middle mgt.
he told me that the Indian IT specialists that SIA contracts to just cannot make the great because of the language and breakdown in communication. he told me that even those indian IT guys in singapore would give you Z when you asked for A when you get to tell them face to face what is required. What more those faraway in india where you cannot even explain things to them face to face.
anyway...its easy to use abstract economic theories to explain outsourcing but i think its a very recent phenomenon and no one really knows where it might lead us. cost savings could be just very superficial benefits that everyone is hyping about. i believe the cost/benefits might be more than economic to the country...just a hunch.. -
outsourcing will only further worsen e unemployment situation sg is already in and many pple will find themselves out of job. A weak singaporean economy will mean that its people and the government will find ways and means to cut down on their budgets. Companies guilty of outsourcing may be badly hit in one way or another. and outsourcing to other countries?? that's exploitation of cheap labour.

Singapore Government knows very well no matter what goes wrong (and they know Singapore economy is going down the drain over the next few crucial years), their own businesses MUST produce SURPLUS to cater for their back doors just in case the Singapore economy slumps into deep shit....

The world trend is to outsource expensive works and services to others who can perform the same more economically.
So, Singapore will find it difficult to resist this trend. If we resist it, we may find our exports and other works and services uncompetitive and lose jobs.
Having said this, the question to be asked is: How to outsource and turn the savings from outsourcing to create more investments, save jobs or even to increase jobs.
Is our government adopting this strategy? Only a pro-employment and pro-business government will help to prevent loss of jobs in the event of outsourcing becoming a trend.
Foreign investments are based on mega-economic policy. How about rationalising foreign investment policies and be more accountable so as to invest surpluses and reinvest investment gains to create and safeguard jobs.
There are still many viable local businesses the government can go into locally such as using our available resources like vacant lands etc to start substitution and agro-based industries to save us foreign exchanges. Our farm produces may be a little expensive compared with imported ones but such industries can provide our retirees and unemployed with entrepreneurial opportunities and create jobs. Are we have a holistic economic strategy aimed at making our own domestic sector strong instead of investing in foreign countries with no particular plans or strategies.
It is not a good economic strategy just to emphasise that we need foreigners and foreign companies to create jobs. The endless wooing of foreign investments did not seem to work well during past two recessions. Try to be more holistic to look after our own businesses or citizens as well. -

If you're providing the same service as someone (outsourcing company) else is providing, why would you be choosen to handle the job?
Instead, find yourself a niche and go into it. There are definitely jobs that are un-outsourcable...... -
normally outsourcing from one company to another company will be contract basis and extend depending on performance and cost bidding from another company.
it will eventually lead to company trying to outbid one another which means workers wages will be squeese, workers be offer contracts works.
no doubt, we cant stop this from happening but at least govt can shut their mouth and stop encourage company to outsource to stay afloat. dispite MOM restated that it was not their intention to promote outsourcing but din we hear it from press day in day out.
every ministries now trying to outsourcing now i sure to follow the trend set by SATs. but seem like only parliament is increasing overhead such as increasing title like SM, PM advisor. since our PM is so inefficient in performing his work and need so many assistant, we should outsource PM too. -
Government has not rationalized the impact of outsourcing on ordinary citizens, it seems. Minister of Manpower has just said that outsourcing is inevitable. With this announcement, many private firms will be bolder in outsourcing so will the government. I just find it pretty interesting that in the midst of all this, the government still wonders why a significant number of Singaporeans do not want to settle down and produce more cheap labour for the government to expl...ooops, I mean raise children and enjoy a happy family life.

4th October Straits Times carries an article on JPMorgan Chase announcing it was cancelling a multi-billion dollar outsourcing deal with IBM.
Wonder would this starts a new trend

Very sensible observation. If jobs are outsourced to companies in singapore, then employments are kept in singapore.
