A businessman, Meng Seng's entrepreneurial spirit led him to start his own business immediately after obtaining his Bachelor Degree (with Honours), Major in Economics, from the National University of Singapore (NUS) in 1993.
Meng Seng subscribes strongly to democratic socialism. His active engagement in politics started during his undergraduate days in NUS. He posted his comments and views on socio-political issues on "primitive" bulletin boards and soon progressed to posting his views and engaging in discussions on newsgroups such as soc.culture.singapore in the mid-90s.
Meng Seng engaged in the comfort of such "sideline" politics until the 2001 general election when it was imminent that opposition politics would be crushed unless more people were willing to come forward and do their part.
As a firm believer of the need for check and balance in every system, it dawned on him that there was a real danger and possibility that Singapore might lose its only two opposition MPs in Parliament. Said Meng Seng, "It was a time of reckoning and I had to make a choice to relinquish my comfortable position as an armchair critic. All the discussions and talks would be meaningless when the time comes for genuine action and we do not rise to the occasion."
Meng Seng believes strongly in a forward-looking opposition that goes beyond opposing and confrontational politics. After meeting with Mr Low Thia Khiang, it became clear to him that the direction of The Workers' Party of Singapore (WPS) resonated with his ideals of pro-Singapore politics. This was his fundamental reason for joining the WPS.
He explained, "I was glad to learn that the CEC members share similar views and stance as I do. We are not afraid to look at ourselves critically and most importantly, we believe in putting national and peoples' interest above the party's interests."
Meng Seng hopes to contribute to the WPS and Singapore with his knowledge in Economics, and helps the party in its various activities.

Dear arburthen?,
It is true that there would be opportunists in any political parties, PAP included. It is impossible to eradicate all opportunists from all political parties, PAP included.
I have always discuss this "problem" with my comrades. As far as I know, the core group we have right now, do not have opportunists; this is basically due to the highly adverse and hostile environment we work in. Who would want to take such a high risk? Most people like to identify themselves with winners, bigger players; when MNCs go on recruitment talks, there are hundreds of them attending.
If people like us are that easily "corrupted" by money or materialistic rewards, we won't be here anymore. However, we must watch out for those "opportunists" that you are talking about when we start growing stronger. Indeed, there are lots of "opportunists" out here; there are even "opportunists" seeking to be NMPs; they don't want to sweat it out but they want to speak in parliament!
BTW, you know of any biggest "opportunist" politician in Singapore's history?

None of them are given free "press coverage"
just look at the grass root meetings and speaking to the public..
you only see PAP members during grass roots, mps or some community activities and "stuffs" .
i have hardly seen chiam see tong interacting with the public in TV.. -

No. Opportunists are mainly aiming for opportunities for selfish means. You have not qualify how by representing their wards, they could satisfy their selfish means. i support GMS. i think you have the guts to challenge PAP. we need someone like you to dare voice out against PAP.but please avoid defamation, the last thing singapore need is another disappoinment of CSJ.
i think you will have a strong support if u stand out for election next time. even though you might not have won out right, you will be qualify for NMP.
