Amnesty International (AI) is a worldwide movement of people who campaign for internationally recognized human rights.
AIÂ’s vision is of a world in which every person enjoys all of the human rights enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and other international human rights standards.
In pursuit of this vision, AIÂ’s mission is to undertake research and action focused on preventing and ending grave abuses of the rights to physical and mental integrity, freedom of conscience and expression, and freedom from discrimination, within the context of its work to promote all human rights.
AI is independent of any government, political ideology, economic interest or religion. It does not support or oppose any government or political system, nor does it support or oppose the views of the victims whose rights it seeks to protect. It is concerned solely with the impartial protection of human rights.
AI has a varied network of members and supporters around the world. At the latest count, there were more than 1.8 million members, supporters and subscribers in over 150 countries and territories in every region of the world. Although they come from many different backgrounds and have widely different political and religious beliefs, they are united by a determination to work for a world where everyone enjoys human rights.
AI is a democratic, self-governing movement. Major policy decisions are taken by an International Council made up of representatives from all national sections.
AIÂ’s national sections and local volunteer groups are primarily responsible for funding the movement. No funds are sought or accepted from governments for AIÂ’s work investigating and campaigning against human rights violations. -
Given AI has a record of critizing westen, democratic countries as well as countries like Singapore, it is impartial in general. However, the individual AI Chapters that handle the cases may not be that impartial or being misled.Originally posted by The Barracuda:

AI Chapters are managed by the Office in London, so they will not easily kowtow to any organizations, political or otherwise, not even the SDA, as Siow Jia Rui tried to claim (stupidly) in a letter to the press. Besides, AI has recieved awards from orgs like the UN for its work. It does seem anyway that most of the actions in each of its chapters' sites have follow-ups in the HQ's website. So I still think HQ in London controls everything to do by AI.

This Siow Jia Rui is one hell of a bootlicker.Someone should sign her up with the Army.Imagine you are so far away in Sydney,of course you would be insulated from the realities of life here.Even a rich fella in a SL500 would be more closer to the ground than this lady.

The UN is powerless without American support. How can we trust an organisation which isn't even neutral in the first place?

Honestly, if you or your friends are so tired of living here, by all means, emigrate. Singapore will be a better place without people like you around who have NO constructive ideas on how to make this place a better home but only dares to voice your opinions using pseudonyms in forums like this. I challenge you to use your own name and write in to the newspapers with your views on the your realities of life here. Go ahead. I stand by my views unreservedly. This is my position. At least I dare to voice my views. Unlike cowards like you. You are pathetic to say the least. And before I went to Australia 2 years ago, I have been living in Singapore all my life so I do know the realities here and unlike other Singaporeans who emigrate, I am coming back. I sincerely hope all three of you leave Singapore for good since you just can't seem to have anything positive to say about this place. Pathetic cowards is the best description for you.
