but experience tells us that once the govt hits it's desired target,
things will go back to the same old days...

to me, no matter how attractive the packages seem to be, i will not be tempted. cos in singapore, or no matter where u go now, the standard of living is increasing and it will bring stress to the child. i cant bear to bring misery to someone else.

The government wants more babies so the the population numbers can remain stable or better yet increase. This is to ensure that we have enough cheap labour for local and foreign companies to exploit, and enough people contributing to their cpf accounts. Quality of life has nothing to do with it.
And yes, I agree that bringing a child into singapore may very well be an act of cruelty, seeing the direction that this country and the world in general is moving towards. The kindest thing you can do for your unborn children will be to make sure they remain unborn.
P.S. And to the idiots who came with with the ludicrious target population of 8 milllion, a pox on all your houses! There's barely enough walking space in Singapore at its current population level. -

Limit of freedom. Gangersterism still alive. Profiteering at every possible chance.

The standard of living is ridiculously high and your kid go thru highly subsidized education which cost like a bomb given it should be subsidized for citizen and to graduate with degree or higher in end to be unemployed like what you see on the street of singapore. Why? Because, their salary is too high. Bosses preferred to hire FT in place of these local pple esp guy. Outsourcing is the way to go and cannot be escaped. -

Let me share a cruel hard fact gathered that can be seen in singapore irregardless of individual opinion of being proud or not proud to be a singaporean.
The number of foreign talent in most company are growing relative to the local. Reason, most company especially mnc are employing cheap labour from oversea especially india to do project. They employ a fresh graduate from india which cost them only around SGD 800 per month compared to a fresh graduate from local university at around SGD 2k+. So for the pay of one local fresh graduate, they can get 3 indian to do the same jobs. Once these indian came over and learned all the required skill to replace singaporean. The project will be outsource to the indian team setup in india. Operation like call center, administrative, IT work, many more etc all shifted to india leaving singaporean jobless. That's why you hear retrenchment here and there. Furthermore, the foreign talent also came over to singapore to compete with the local for jobs that has not or cannot be shifted. They are hardworking, less demanding, no NS liability, willing to take a lower salary compared to singaporean. So why these pple are willing to take on such a lower salary?
Let's see some statistical comparison.
Comparison between indian and singaporean fresh engineering graduate.
Indian Fresh Grad
Expected salary range : SGD 800 - 2000

the gov wants us singaporeans to have more babies because our replacement level is below the target 2.1 children. now we only have like 1.5-1.7. with lesser children, we will face lack of labour in the future and u shld guess the outcome of it. also, we will have less men serving ns. with less children in the future, we might have an ageing population. thus, we will have a greater group of ppls having to dependent on the working population. besides, with ageing population, we have to focus more on the eldery such as their needs. more facilities for them have to be built and with lesser working ppls, our economy will be strained. the lack of children also means the closure of schs, for the past few years more than 20 new schs were constructed. just a month ago, the newspaper reported that some pri sch enrolment for next yr is just 30. this just met the min requirement of a class. just imagine in the future when there are less kids.

Well, as usual the government high up on its ivory tower is missing the whole point and trying to treat the symptoms instead of the disease. People are not having babies because they can barely support themselves, are living in an overcrowded environment, losing jobs to foreigners, seeing their real incomes drop while the cost of living keeps going up etc etc etc. The only way for the birth rate to go up will be for the government to address these issues.
