'So hip' NUS the choice for most JC students

It's all about marketing.
Marketing.
Those naive students actually fell for the marketing gimmicks.
They should have internships there during when they are still in JC to see the real "hip-ness" -
I think that such schemes exists though it is limited to students assisting professors to do their research projects...
But yet again which University would not market itslef? It depends on this pool of talent for survival and to sieve out talent -

From what I heard, the chemistry and mathematics department is pretty competent...

Man... this is so dumb. Think it's because of the government's crazy drive to make everyone more creative, and be entrepeuners.
Think students should ask themselves what they really want. A quality education, or some 'hip' place to be in.
NUS is un-rivalled due to it's branding as The Premier University of Singapore. NTU is un-rivalled in due to it's constant churning out of the 'working professional' and
SMU is un-rivalled in being the first to liberalise the "entry to uni"... (also holds the record for having the girls who come to school in the shortest skirts).
IN reality, the education in S'pore sucks. All uni students know that. Compare with your friends who are labelled "cannot make it" after their A-levels, we have lower pay, lower degrees and yet we slogged like Mad Cows cramming 1.5 times the load of what students overseas do.
NUS, NTU,SMU... hmmm.. decide wisely or regret -
MIT grad? Caltech grad? UC grad? talking about cool, I'm sure not many unis own any supercars.
We have a Yamaha OX99-11 sitting in our motorsport workshop, and there are only 3 ever made in the world. One red one orange and one black. And we own the black one. wooot! 0-100 in 3.2sec, top speed of 350km/h, n costs a cool US$805 000. v v
oh we have a working jet fighter in the aero workshop as well, plus 2 life-sized flight sims.....

If the deciding factor of which vasity to enter hinges on the quality of babes, then i suggest you go overseas.
As for teaching methods, i would have to agree that SMU, being the latest addition in Singapore, may develop students using a more interactive approach compared to NUS or NTU. However, it does not make it better .
Ppl still hold the misconception that the name of the school gives it prestige rather than the student population. Yale, Oxford and Brest are well known because of the students who propser after studying there, not the name itself. Harvard business sch did not become famous overnight. They are just as likely to collapse if a series of scandals and corruption rocked the institutions.
NTU just introduced a pioneer aerospace course, is developing the biomedical engineering division and has constructed a new facility for life science research. Their strength remains engineering, with NBS a close second. Su Guan Eng is clearly building on the efforts and vision of previous president Chiam Tao Soon, which involve pushing NTU into a full-fledged university within 5-10 years.
NUS's expansion plans are likewise in a similar direction. The completion of their UCC has seen their Arts faculty elevated in importance. New, points-free hostels are being introduced to entice more foreign students to stay on campus.
As for SMU, their location must be extremely tempting, coupled by the promise of a world class university design.
And should they decide to build hostels in the same location, one wonders how the administration will keep the peace.....
