I remember a ghost gave me advice about physics, he explained the doppler effect to me by comparing with echos.

The answer: Ghosts who are here to take revenge on people who have done them wrong in the past when they were alive, and/or to settle unresolved negative karma with the people they are seeking, as these people will naturally feel the most fear when encountering these ghosts. Generally, ghosts will not bother with living people, unless there is a real reason to. You can be standing/sitting/lying next to one without even knowing it, as most people cannot see them.
