Home-grown radar allows soldiers see through walls
DEFENCE engineers said on Thursday that they are developing a radar that will allow counter terrorist forces and search and rescue teams to 'see' through concrete walls to detect movement
DSO National Laboratories, Singapore's largest defence research and development organisation, has revealed that its 'through-wall radar surveillance system' has been successfully tested in trials since the project began in mid 2002.
These involved scanning solid concrete walls some 30cm thick from various distances.
Mr Tan Chee Seng, DSO's Director of Sensors, said the radar is being improved so it can scan thicker walls even when placed 100m or more away, yet portable enough to be carried on a soldier's back.
Engineers are also tweaking the radar so it will be sensitive enough to 'see' whether a person is armed from the radar image.
The few countries involved in such research usually prefer to keep the technology to themselves, Mr Tan said -

However, you may be disappointed with the results as the method works with only some types of cloth materials - not commonly worn in Sg, and dependant on lighting conditions.
Disclaimer I have NOT used the technique for the purpose suggested
. I have only done some security related experiments using the same principle. -

The experiment that I had done was nothing to do with clothing at all. It was an initial feasibility study for my post-grad research related to facial recognition (more specifically with faces partially hidden by sun glasses), and document verification (after text had been hidden by ink etc). However, I had abandoned this topic and focused instead of machine vision and image processing.
Gotcha -
There's nothing so secretive about UWB radars. There are plenty of designs around the internet, and you can even buy a book about it from amazon. What's so great about DSO anyway? copycat only what.

No doubt the concept has been around for some time, but the article didn't claim we came up with the concept. We are just making a version of our own.
