One is detonated by electric wires, the other is by conventional dynamites... Am I right? Don't ask me how they work... Haha
Had a brief spell learning such stuff before going to water bridging...

Electric demolitions are initiated by an electrical denotator which is set off by electrical source (i.e. a wind up, like the old plunger you see is movies).
Non-electric are initiated by non-electric means i.e. burning fuze or chemical reaction (timer fuze). Both have advantages and disadvantages. -
So I wasn't talking nonsense afterall... I once set off an electric detonator... Press and press that thing like pumper to charge up electricity... Anyway, no shiok since quite far from the live dynamite area... electric = detonator with 2 tiny wire sticking out
non-electric = detonator with 1 hole for you to insert safety fuse in.

electric detonators ususally set off the primers to the charges by the means of using electricity.. they may range from the conventional batteries that you put into your appliances or it may be generated through hand-powered generators.. once the electrical pulse is sent through the 2 wires, the spark would initiate the primer or 'first-fire' in order to get the larger charge to explode, as the larger charge is usually more stable in nature and isn't really prone to combustions.. if i remember correctly, i think in primary school or secondary school we did experiments on the 'filament wire' thing. that's exactly the same thing.. the thing will become hot and ignite the primer.
non-electric detonators, as it's name suggests, uses the old method of lighting the fuse or as it's commonly known term, det-cord. det-cord is used by the many of us here in the army as it's waterproof, cheap and burns at a fast rate. it's this tube with a small portion of (i think) c4 inside it, and once you set it off, you better run cause it burns F-A-S-T. however there are also other non electric detonators such as delayed-timers, using acid to melt away stuff or water, you know lah...

Try not to use handphones or radio devices around electric denotators, and try not to mix your 7200m/s fuses up with your safety fuses when you use nonelectrics while rigging your I-Chain huh?

he's not referring to radio detonators but just basic safety when handling electrical detonators. radio transmitters like signal set and handphone transmit radio frequency and when these RF cuts electrical wire, a current is induced and this can set off the detonators. there's cases of this happening before and strict rules are practiced. this is also a reason why electrical detonators are not used when blowing up targets like radio transmitter towers or any installations capable of producing RF. you won't want the detonator to set off before u are ready.Originally posted by John Ching:I think you're referring more to radio detonators then wired detonators.

e.g. area defence or ambush, then electrical detonators are used and you just need to fire off from a distance.
e.g booby trap, non-electrical detonator is used where a trigger mechanism is connected with an I-chain directly to a claymore. the mechanism is tripped and the thing will fire. no worries about not enough current or battery -

dude why do you want to know so much about explosives and ordanance? have you tried using the 'search' button yet or have you gone to some search engine to try and find out what you really want to know? seriously there's alot out there if you know where to find.. but what you see there would never be enough as you need proper training in the handling and applications of explosives and demolitions.
here's something to try out.
1 part aluminium oxide.
1 part iron oxide.
mix well and ignite. burns at 2000 degrees celcius.. (or is it 4000deg c, can't remember..)
if you don't know what al2o3 or fe2o3 (is that correct? anyone?) then even better, the world is a safer place. -

anyway mika, search for 'explosive ordanance' on the net. you'll learn more there than 10 years (ok im exaggerating) in here.
just take note that governments monitor those who go to these sites and see how long you spend time there... haa.

I-chain or "initation chain" is a fuze and detonator which you use a fuzie to light the det cord with.
As the det cord detonates at 6,000 feet per sec, you need the I-chain (usually prepared for 60 sec) to light up, run for cover, shouting "ignighted.. one one thousand ... two one thousand ..." etc till "kaboom"

whats a booster for?My fren told me that for an explosion in a straight line to be set off the entire row of explosives are supposed to go off at the same time thus the need for these boosters.
