and what might that be? submarine carrier? as far as i know i've never heard of it. maybe i'm being ignorant, but i do know that submarines escort aircraft carriers as part of a carrier battle group.

I read somewhere China had only one servicing nuclear submarine, & it's apparently a "koyak" one - docked frequently due to problems. Considering Japan also spotted Chinese savage ships nearby ... make your own conclusions.
China may have sent the probe to to signal its displeasure at being targeted as "bogeyman" by Jap defence planners (as reported yesterday), though. -

Don't think it is fair to say that sub don't surface to repair. Possible it can be a non-nuclear sub - recharging batteries.
