  Police officers from the Special Operations Command (SOC) were deployed in Serangoon Gardens on Thursday evening in the first armed patrols in a housing area.
  
  They strolled near the crowded hawker centres with their submachine guns.

  Not PC to say this, but I think it's starting to be a joke. My friend tipped me off about watching out for the news telecast, & said photographers were clicking away as a crowd followed the SOC patrol from behind (like a ministerial walkabout).
  
  Until the novelty wears out, I'm guessing those guys will feel very self-conscious.

  govt want to faster protect rich and 'angmoh' areas like serangoon gardens bukit timah and holland village first ah....then after that then go to places where the 'peasant singaporeans' live like toa payoh and ang moh kio....cb govt.

  seems like ever since 911 police have been given more teeth now and can openly carry submachine guns in public.

  I wonder if these SOC patrols would eventually be replaced by KINS personnel. The latter's been in higher profile this year, a triple whammy of open-mob activation, 2 units-on-standby (both for the 1st time) & the operational opening of their new PKTC camp (which has FIBUA facilities).
