5 incidents in 15 years...sounds slightly better than average to me. to normal people who hear of the 1 incident SIA has had so far, 5 seems far too many. however we need to consider that these are trainee pilots who may be flying solo most of the time low and fast over hostile terrain doing potentiall dangerous manueveres. compared to worldwide airforce statistics, 5 incidents in 15 years is slightly lower than what would expect. however i do agree that the s211 should be replaced by newer trainers, like the semi-stealth MAKO...

is the USAF had 5 crashes in 15 yrs at one airbase, they'd be jumping for joy

The aircraft is old but still quite well maintained..
should be still using it for a few more years until we find a suitable replacement..
We dont' change jets overnight because of the high costs involved.. so we usually max out the lifespan of the jets.
anyway.. this incident is pilot error, most prob not due to aircraft problem since he already landed the jet.
Anyway GinGin airfield is the satellite airfield where trainee pilots practice their circuits initally. -
that guy a first timer.. did he brake too hard or wat.. guess the runway should be lengthen.. for trainee.

There is probably a need for a Fighter Lead-In aircraft (Advanced Jet Trainer). Currently we are using the A4SU as this role in France. But when we phase out the a/c, there will be a gap in the capability.
Probably it might make sense to get a BAe Hawk type of trainer that can be used in both the current S211 and A4SU training roles. and then we can reduce the number of aircraft types
Do you think the RSAF will use the F5s for a AJT?
Also a lot of Air forces are "outsourcing" or "hubbing" their training activities, i am sure singapore will want to examine this also given our restricted air space. -

Can the S-211 be use for combat roles such as limited ground support like the Hawk trainers used in Malaysia? Thanks

The SIAI Marchetti S211 supplied by Aermacchi is a military jet pilot trainer in operation with the air forces of Haiti, the Philippines and Singapore. S211A, the latest high-performance version of the aircraft, has full acrobatic capability and can be armed with a range of weapon systems.
WEAPONS
The aircraft has five hardpoints: two under each wing and one under the centre fuselage. The hardpoints can carry a range of weapon systems, including bomb and rocket dispenser for MK76, MK 106 or 50/68 mm rockets; bombs and practice bomb containers up to 250kg; bomb and napalm containers up to 350kg; rocket launchers from 50 to 100mm; gun pods for 7.62mm, 20mm and 12.7mm guns; and 74mm cartridge launchers.
The hardpoints can also carry smoke generators, parachuting containers, photographic and reconnaissance pods, and two auxiliary tanks, each with a capacity of 270 litres of fuel.

1. Their technology not so new, no point buying an elderly airframe.
