This is only a recent occurence, remember the period just before the first Gulf War, after the defeat at Vietnam, US soldiers were actually spat upon and looked down on when they returned from station overseas.
The US military only came back into favour after the First Persian Gulf War and the newer conflicts. Even with these more successful tours, you still have to take into account that the path to public respect and admiration was paved with blood and souls of men who died in action.
Also, keep in mind that our military runs mostly on account of National Service, our citizens are all "military" to some degree. You can't expect special status here just because you wear a uniform for the simple fact that most people in Singapore are serving or will serve military service. In Singapore, we don't have a "soldier class" like in the USA simply because almost every male above 18 is, to some degree, a soldier. If Singapore did go to war, I doubt you'd find many Civilian Men.
