about...a enemy artilery deployment is imminent and its facing towards your borders...
you have been deployed on a amphibious tank to pre-empt them...
In the beginning...it all seems well...
The army is well into 100km into hostile land...
and your the tank-commander now for a MBT...
and your helping to guard some medic trucks..
It has been known that...yesterday a car packed with explosives rammed into a tank and killed alot of your comrade-in-arms..
You see a car heading towards you , through a binoculars...
You have the choice of pointing the cannon towards it or not.
1) If you point at it you fire, you will be charged with slaughtering civilians
and you will be brought over to a military court unless those people found
evidence that the car was indeed carrying explosives
2) If you do not fire at it and if it explodes, see you in heaven....
Its about 2 km away , and there's a possibility that the person might have drove wrongly or might be carrying civilians inside and looking for medical attention..
Which option would you choose?
Or did someone told u the answer?

There's no way the person could have seen you...through so far...
but you have managed to see them...through their headlights...
You can't identify them as well.. -
get the sniper to stop the vehicle and a few sai-gung-ers to secure the people....most important is you use eye-power and NATO, do not even leave the comfort of your safety zone.

The scenario you present is a standard one in POI missions (Protection of Installations). There is already an SOP to handle this.
If the situation is relatively benign like the one you describe, the car will be aimed at, challenged and ordered to stop over a megaphone. If the car refuses to stop after two or three challenges, it is threatened with deadly force ("Stop!" "Stop!" "Stop or I will shoot!"). If it still refuses to stop, it is attacked with the minimum force needed to stop it. Assuming all of these rules are followed, even if the car turns out to be full of unarmed civilians, you have broken no laws. This is similar to how police handle the situation.
If the situation is more dangerous (e.g. the car starts moving suddenly when you approach within 50m), and the commander on the ground has reason to believe he is under attack (e.g. bombings have occured before), you are allowed to open fire immediately without a challenge. Again, minimum force must be used. This is not against military law even if you are shown later to be in error, but you must demonstrate that you had reasonable cause to think you were in danger and that you used minimum force.
The same situation applies to a civilian that has gotten out of the car, or approaches troops or a checkpoint. Target, challenge and if necessary engage with minimum force. If you are in danger, defend yourself with minimum force.
There are also SOPs for searching suspect vehicles. The basic idea is that you get the occupants of the vehicle to open everything while you look and ask questions at a safe distance. For searching civilians in time of war, the same thing applies (make him pull up his shirt, drop his pants and open his bags for inspection at a safe distance). For searching of females, female troops or policewomen and a private search area should be arranged (now you know why we have female troops).
Go ask soldiers from the new POI batallion 6SIR -- they will give you the full story. -
Tech Term is "Rules of Engagement".
i) Use any and all force to protect yourself.
ii) Give adequate warning before applying deadly force (shooting into the air/on ground before car, 2km away is too bloody far, more like 300m before threat can be recgonized as such).
iii) Use sufficient force to show person making threat that you can and will use deadly force, shooting car engine block to disable.
iv) Protect property while obeying standing orders (assuming orders are to stop, search any intruders and to protect 'medic trucks' (duh!))
v) If above fails shoot the f#*k out of the B@$%+d.
My own philo, if you have to shoot aim for incapaciting wound or else duck. No shit about clipping his wings etc. Just don't qiuote me. -
Shoot the air, order him to come out.If he doesn't come out, shoot the ground, proceeding with the tires, engine block until suspect begins to cooperate.If he turns deadly, shoot him in the leg.Unless he's taking out a weapon, then drop him with required effort.

Obviously I would advise you to take a gun to shoot your brain first ! There is just to many fault with your scenerio !!! First you say your tanks are position to strike at artilleries !!! then you say your tanks is guarding medic truck !!!
Make up your mind what the f@@K is your mission !!! If you are posed for pre-emptive strike against artilleries, that be in the forefront which no way medic trucks will be with you !!! For medicial they will be well protected by ground troops.
You will have at least another tank and 2 IFV with your tank. By the way IVF carry armour troopers .....!!! Just deploy out the troops to intercept the car !!!
At 2km, think that is just too far for you to know who is in the car, maybe your OC ! Anyway just have to wait for it to come closer.
I will not even think of using tanks or IFV ! Why first using a 20mm chain gun and cannon is over kill.
Next if this is war !!! The most important thing at that moment is fuel and tactical. Remember tanks and IFV are not running 24 hrs all the time, as they suck up fuel too fast. I will not be powering up all my tanks or IFV the moment I see a small car at 2 Km away !!! This will generate too much noise and heat signature to totally announ to enemy where my tanks and IFV is. When my armour infantries have all the weapon like GMPG and saw to take it out easily if needed. -
Well,the target vehicle is 2km away.I will allow it to approach to round 1km and using a mega-phone order it to stop and fire flares to warn the driver and passengers in the vehicle to stop.
If they comply then all is well and I would order AI forward to carry out a seach of the vehicle under the protection of my tank's gun and the weapons from the IFVs.
If after the warnings are issued and there is no compliance,I will order a shot to be fired from the maingun of the tank at the ground 50m ahead of the tank as a warning shot.And if no compliance,order the .50cal or co-axial gunner to fire a short burst at the tires and engine block of the vehicle to stop it,before sending in the AI under cover from the IFVs and my tank to seach the vehicle.Get the passengers and driver out and prone them before searching them.At this point if they attempt any hanky-panky,will order them to rifle-butt them and all orders must be met with immediate compliance or they will also be rifle-butted. -

With this notion, it means that the idea of a headlong charge by an explosive-
laden vehicle into installation will not be practised when authorities' alert levels are way up. They will either execute the Jakarta Australian embassy-style drive-by bombings, or couple those bombings as diversionary stunts to
draw on the investigating authorities into one place and pounce on all the
key elements with a devastating (psychological and real) blow to the expert groups and specialists.
With the primary quick reaction forces out of action they will conduct ripple strikes on other softer targets at multiple locations simultaneously. Real-time communications is key to such operations, so the cellular network will be their
primary medium. -

if i'm in an MBT... haha i'll just turn the front of the tank towards him. Exactly. Besides, if your had an MBT, you could use your .50 instead of the main gun, and even if you used the main gun, you could fire a short round as a warning shot. If someone sees an explosion in front of him and keeps charging, he's asking to get wiped off the face of the earth. sniper rifle the styr (sorri again if wrong spelling) can only go up to half a km or so i believe.... the new rifles are still being tested... -
can go further but it will dip and it won't hit at where u aim. it takes a good rifle and steadyhands to hit something 1Km away with the grouping of a fist. play safe, shoot under 800m cos even the average sniper rifle can give u a good gairlantee it will hit accurately. plus if the weather is sibeh jialat, don't risk.Originally posted by Devilsmarlin:hmmm....
