Not true...During training, they draw their dagger, which is called Khukiri, to cut trees, thick growth and plants to clear a path. Sometimes they draw for polishing and sharpening. No need to cut themselves.Originally posted by JJxJJ:if they draw their dagger.. for no reason.. they have to cut themselves n the blood must be on the dagger... thats what my grandmom said....![]()
not dagger. the legend actually comes from the legend that Gurkha Kuris(the knife symbolic of gurkhas) have to draw blood when drawn from the sheath.Originally posted by kakashi84:ya..i heard many stories abt them.1 legend is that if they draw their dagger, blood has to be spilled.![]()
I was in nepal for a hike around the annapura ranges when I was 16. Most of us with 1 backpack already half dying on the mountains. the sherpas, were happily prancing up the mountain with 3 or 4 SUITCASES in a big basket they carry on their back. I'd definately say they ARE part mountain goat, park incredible hulk.Originally posted by Gedanken:Well, the short answer is no for the moment. While we do have small units like SOF, the SAF doesn't have an all-regular force on the scale of the Gurkha contingent.
And yes, they're bloody fit. The way they run up hills, I'd swear they were part mountain goat.
That said, our lads from SOF are easily up to par with the Gurkhas on a man-to-man level. Unless Meculo happens to also know many of our force line lads on a first-name basis, I wouldn't take his opinion too seriously.
Ultimately, it comes down to professionalism, which Gurkhas are renowned for. Whenever our guys bumped into the Gurkhas in Changi, there was mutual respect, and that's what I liked most about them.
