AESA radars

  i was reading through the NGF threads, and i noticed a lot abt the AESA radar...
  
  i'd like to know whats the advantage of AESA radars over conventional ones and how it works, if possible

  AESA radar eliminates the need for a mechanically swept antennae. The antennae sweep is now controlled using wave properties such as phase difference. AESA antennae should be taking up much less space in the radome as compared to a conventonal radar. Also, the sweep rate of the antennae can be much faster as it is nologer limited by the mechanical linkages.

  Doesn't the A also means the antenna is an active one versus waveguides and slotted planar?
  
  If it's an antenna with active elements, together with beam forming, does it means too that the ERP and therefore range is higher?

  But the LCD screens are much lighter and require less energy though LCD screens emit less noise.
  
  AESA are a number of magnitudes heavier which explains the wider beam of Formidable class.
