Mechanised infantry in PDF? Wah, this is news to me........Originally posted by bcoy:The different Guards brigades in the reserves are tasked with different operations - airmobile, amphibious operations, etc, etc. I ended up from airmobile to mechanised infantry in PDF.

I was always curious, is there a reason why the divisions are numbered in multiples of three (e.g. 3rd Div, 6th Div & 9th Div)?
Ya, but after the IRAQ war, SAF find that it not working very well as what had happen to the US. So it was somehow hang in mid-air.Originally posted by i-SHOT:Here's a tad piece of old news. For a moment there, the SAF was considering converting one of the Guards unit into a Marines detachment. This was sometime in the mid-80s. That was what the CDO commandant of our commanders course said. I guess that never happened.

I was always curious, is there a reason why the divisions are numbered in multiples of three (e.g. 3rd Div, 6th Div & 9th Div)?I think it's so primarily cuz the SAF divisions, prior to the combined-arms revamp, were primarily infantry-based. A lot depended on how the 1st few batches of NS soldiers ORD'd (given that not every active combat was simultaneously formed together in the 1st place) & what the pioneering SAF planners chose to constitute as a functional brigade & subsequently divisional strength. They eventually settled on threes, i.e. 3 reservist SIRs forming a SIB (INF), & then 3 SIBs forming a DIV.
Just to add on - in the 1990's - the full-time Guards brigade was 7th SIB, there was a reserve Guards brigade - the 14th SIB, and you have 21DIV.Originally posted by aerozapper:Not exactly related to Guards but since we're on the topic of history etc...

I guess they're debating the use or effectiveness of a Marine unit. In fact, I think they (US Marines) are possibly one of the most versatile units out there.
It not scrap yet due to the "hard wear" we had purchase so (I think) someone is doing some changing up there.

Just by chance, I live about 7 miles down the road from Quantico where their WTBN (Weapons Training Bn) is based and I gotta say, they are easily one of the best riflemen out there. They are fanatics about basic marksmanship and such. Some of the best instructors I've trained with were former Marines.
Talking about BASIC marksmanship. Where is ours?
Is there any more ATP or BTP around. I heard no more ATP but section live. Anyone still active? Can confirm?[/b]
