Unfortuantely, it looks like the SAF works upon the assumption that if you're out of ammo, the war's as good as over for you. That said, we did have some limited training in knife fighting in the unarmed combat program, and jungle survival did teach us the value of a good knife.
Ah! Its no fault of the SAF, most military have forgotten the importance of a good knife. Even militaries that use to use knife as their primary weapon, now uses it only for ceremonial purpose or physical trainning.
I would suggest you give it a try knocking lime stones or stones into a cutting edge. Its good knowledge for survival skill but take it slow as you may end up with more injuries before you get a proper stone blade.

I think for the pure infantry, commando types... you need a fighting knife or implement (entrenching tool !) of some sort. Now that the SAR 21 (as I hear) is not fitted with a bayonet lug. You can't stab someone with a Swiss army knife. It can slip in your hand because of sweat or blood, and you can injure yourself. Further, the blade does not have the long slot on both sides, so what happens is that the moment you stick the knife into flesh, it may become stuck because of "suction". And if you did not hit a vital organ or blood vessel... you are in for trouble as your (still-alive) enemy would just be blo....ody pissed off !
My friend with kukri .... he was one of the "signed-on" NCOs in the past. Hence his machoism or his need to prove his machoism... I think he went for SOF selection not sure if he made it... Anyway apologies to him if he is reading here. Double apologies if he is SOF current and waiting to get me ! At that time we had the old sotong SBO, he attached his kukri at a horizontal on one of the shoulder vertical straps. So that he can draw the knife across his body in one motion ... quite slick.
Thru' out my soldiering days... I was quite concerned about my kit being stolen. So I brought the minimum out. And having stingy parents.... I did not have supplementary pocket money during NS to buy myself extra stuff. -
Anyone know where I can get a Frequent Flyer knife?Heard that it is made of composite material and is unable to be detected by metal detectors etc...

Pls lah. The green one is modelled after push daggers and the black one is modelled after a kerambit. Both are good self defence weapons. What letter opener. i don't favor swiss-army-style tools... usually when i go out to the fields i carry 2, one multi-purpose and one dedicated knife. my multipurpose is the leatherman(the original one, don't know the name, dad gave it to me) and the long knife is a black kabar, but i hate it. chop up a couple of things and the point between the handle and the blade is bent. intending on getting a strider though..
