The thing I like abt our SAW is the removable stock, the foldable mount, a shorter barrel and of course the 100 round drum magazine.
What I hate is the weight -

nobody uses the drum mag i think...due to the fact that u need special tools to take it out... -
They don't use the drum magazine? WHat do they use then? M-16 magazine? If so, it defeats the purpose of SAW which is continuous fire.

I not saw gunner, I 84. I always hear the saw gunners complain ceaselessly that the gun or barrel is dam heavy. I tried to carry once lah .. not as heavy as 84 by a long shot but is not easy to sling carry either.
But personally I like the look with the drum magazine, looks deadly. with the removable stock means you can hide under the long trench coat, the take it out, extend the triport and start firing molten lead into a shop across the road, knn like sometimes you see in those mafia movies LOL
but din know you need a special tool to to remove it, how come? -

Huhz?Take out mehz...I tot it is only during the process of loading the 100 round drum mag then are tools needed.
Anyway,just to sidetrack alittle,I understand that the Ultimax can be loaded from a standard M16 Mag and the 100 round drum.But can it be loaded with 5.56mm belts or like the M249 Minimi style,through a box carrying belt? -

You don't need tools to put in or take out magazine from gun. You need tools to put bullets into the drum magazine because your hand is not strong enough to push bullets into the magazine. For M-16 magazine, the bullets are pushed in by bare hands.

its a major factor why the US chose the M249 over the Ultimax -
Heheheh... I just fired the SAW yesterday at platoon LF, going strong and the weapon could be kept on target despite going full auto, the target was pock-marked by the time we were done with it.
My only main grouse about the SAW is that when it dosen't work, it really dosen't work. Your SAW either works very well, or jams so "reliabily" that it can't be used at all, despite all attempts to clean the weapon. Oh yah, the egronomics of the weapon should be worked on as well, but considering it was a weapon introduced around the time I was a kid, not bad at all.
Heard they're going to replace the SAW with the SAR-21 SAW version eventually, wonder how it's going to work... -
Singapore's ultimax was never in competition for the US SAW requirement.
The war in former Yugoslavia......soldiers from Croatia used our SAW and found it to be good. They could have chosen any saw but they chose ours. -

Replacing the saw with a version based on the SAR-21 is a serious mistake. It will be taking the direction of the Brits who have the crappy LSW based on their bullpup SA-80. Damn thing can only load a 30 or 40 round mag. Call that a SAW?
The Ultimax is less than desirable since the drum magazine is such a problem.
Most of the time they never issue it. And this makes me damn curious. I've heard that it falls off the weapon, and is prone to stoppages.
And what's worst, after firing the drums, you still have to carry the empty drums around. And they are not light.
We should go for a belt system like the rest of the world. -
I know there's a SAR21 SAW prototype (open bolt, automatic fire). But I have to agree that it could be a mistake. We should use the right tools for the right job - in this case, for support fire for the section - a dedicated designed SAW should be used.
The Brits learned this the hard way, and their SA80 LSW is now reduce to a sharpshooter weapon (semi fire). The British infantry section is using the para version of the FN Minimi.
The Germans have a SAW version for the G36 rifle, but never adopted it either. They have decided on the 5.56 MG43 SAW. Only the Chinese are testing a bullpup SAW (QBZ-95 SAW version with drum mag) - don't know how successfull it is though.
Another good SAW would be the Israeli 5.56 Negev. But whatever it is - all belt\magazine combo SAWs will be heavier than the Ultimax 100 series. [/url] -

The U100 was not part of the competition. It came out after the US had a comp and decided on the M249

Not unless someone somewhere designs a box magazine belt adaptor.
Interestingly, the official CIS brochure for the Ultimax says nothing about the drum.
It's so old the uniform is a different type.

loaded with 200 rd box: 9 kg approx.
From the above example,
Ultimax 100 is lightest when loaded.
Of course, we havent considered loading a C-Mag, or drum magazine on the RPK and G36. -

The way I heard it, it wasn't because of the drum. Parts of the bolt design were too similar to that on the M16, and Colt challenged it in court as a copyright infringement.
