I think we have to be realistic here. At that point in time, we had just gain independence,we are at the point of a nation's infancy. With the early withdrawal of the British troops, our defence and economy is not looking good. Unemployment and iliteracy rates were high. Racial and social conflicts were very real. We were also facing an extremely likely threat of annexation by our immediate neighbours, especially Malaysia. Our nations defence consist of no more than 2 infantry battallions and a few boats. We are almost totally defenceless at that time.I think this is one of the reason why we spent so much money in defence now. Because we must never allow ourselves to be in such a helpless position again.
Therefore we cannot even think of defending these islands.If we can't defend them, we don't own them, so the only logical and pragmatic way is to let go of them. In our case, sell them to the Australians.We don't have fighters or navy ships like what the Malaysian or Indonesians have and are doing now in the sea of Sulawesi, so it is very unfair to compare between these two scenarios as they are very different in terms of time and situation.

Those islands are so damn far. Even if we kept them till now and had built up a strong military, we would still require to defend 2 places instead of 1! That doesn't make much sense for us, does it? Moreover, if ppl intended to take over that Island, they would most likely succeed during that period of time

Since we're playing this game, Malaysia should be even more malu, since they lost the entire island of Singapore to the PAP! That's right... the weak loser Tunku Abdul Rahman kicked Singapore out of the Federation because being the MALAY SUPREMIST PIG he was, he couldn't tolerate a Malaysia with RACIAL EQUALITY AND MERITOCRACY.

Most Malaysians I've met still believe that Singapore left the Federation voluntarily, as this is what is taught in Malaysian schools, in order to hide the incompetence of UMNO and cover up this humiliation. This policy began in 1969 when some of the more radical senior UMNO officials (led by Razak) began to call for the return of Singapore. Of course, UMNO can never admit to the fact that they were the ones who ejected SG from the Federation, so naturally they sweep it under the carpet with the pretense that Singapore left on its own will...

PS: idwar, when we Singaporeans seperated from your boleh country, none of us threw our Malaysian passports into the dustbin. As you know, we Singaporeans are famous for being very kiasu and stingy, so we sold either sold the Malaysia passports to the garang guni man or used the pages for toilet paper. -

Strategically, we would have had a better defensive position. If anyone tried to threaten us, they would have to consider our forces coming from the direction of the Cocos/Keeling Islands as well as Christmas Island. We would have been much safer than we are now......just a little red dot.....

If it means what I think it does, we don't even need nuclear weapons!

That was history ! It was a clever move, at that time we just started everything, basically resources are so little that we have to concentrate on Singapore itself, we don't have the spare to look after christmas / keeling island. And speaking of Christmas Island, I might have been an Australian, had my father then working there in Christmas Island choose for Australia instead.
When Christmas Island was sold to Ausland, the population there are given a choice - remains as singapore citizen or be an aussie.
my father pal had choosed to be an aussie while my father came back to singapore.
my family visited him there few years ago.
i might instead be an aussie now, hehe.
