Man, your first 2 choices completely coincide with mine. These are the 2 top choice for weapons I would collect and fire where such a hobby is permissible. I don't like the original FN FAL with the wooden furniture, though.
I also like the PPSh 41.
I also love the good old M16 very much and it is a joy and comfort to shoot and hold. The carrying handle with the rear sight built-in is really clever and a great way to carry the weapon when not in combat situation. Another great way to carry the M16 is with your thumb hooked into the carrying handle and your other fingers clutched around the magazine housing.
The whole weapon is beautifully balanced and is light as a rifle can ever be. The only thing I don't like is the triangular handguard on our ancient M16S1 version.
Changing mags is very fast and easy using your trigger finger to press the mag release and either letting the empty mag fall away for super-fast reloading or pulling it out with your left hand.
It is also great for bayonet fighting and as someone said, dealing out buttstrokes. I saw an M16 buttstroke being performed by one recruit on a fellow recruit when the 2 got into an argument. BEAUTIFUL. The guy who received the buttstroke had difficulty getting up for a while.
All the other things like the charging handle, the easy to reach selector switch, the bolt-release are all so good they cannot be improved upon. This must be the reason why the US used it for over 30 years inspite of all its faults.
The new SAR-21 is bulky and heavy, the bullpup configuration is silly as it is hard to change mags, and all the switches are in the wrong place. So what if it's short? Unless you ride in a armoured vehicle all the time the length of the M-16 had never once been a problem in the ten over years period I have used it.
The accuracy of the M16 is great without a scope and I have no problem getting marksmanship money at the range. So why do we need a permanently fixed scope on the SAR-21? Using the scope makes it slow to find your target in a snap-shooting situation. At least the SAR-21 should have a good set of secondary iron sights but apparently the iron sights found on the SAR-21 is a joke.
And then the SAR-21 designers have decided that we will no longer need to fight hand-to-hand combat. And they have also decided we should just give up or flee once we run out of ammo or if weapon jams in a tight situation. That's why the SAR-21 designers have decided not to put a simple bayonet lug on the SAR-21.
