do u have access to the SAF GPS ?? i remember the setup menu is similar to the ones in the commerical systems. i own the Garmin Etrax, the MILS system used by SAF is not the MGRS, but another format, i now currently in australia, so i can't recall the excat reference they use, but if u can borrow saf GPS set, go to the setup, ur able to see the settings used.Originally posted by weeie:do you have any model to recommend? and by the way is the mgrs in mils or degree?
As long u set it to the settings as setted on the SAF GPS, meaning the same type of Map Grid Reference and Datum , you will get the same reading as the SAF GPS. One thing to take note, the Northing and Easting reading are in 5 digits each, YYYYY, XXXXX, the first X and Y from the LEFT side is redundant in singapore terrain, so read the 2nd numbers onwards.Originally posted by weeie:sorry i think i phrased the question wrongly.. i mean are there any 6 digits/8 digits mgr for our reference...does it work the same when in overseas? And does the compass work in mils(6400) or degree(360)?
Yes there is. As stated above, the Co-ord given is XXXXX YYYYY. However, you will have to reprogram your GPS unit when overseas; this will involve changing the Datum, etc.Originally posted by weeie:sorry i think i phrased the question wrongly.. i mean are there any 6 digits/8 digits mgr for our reference...does it work the same when in overseas? spot on ...thats the one., the Datum also has to be changed, i can't remember.Actually the BSO of the Unit is incharge of the equipment, so i think u can ask him for the coordinates and the setting up. Well as for the inaccuracy which unit did u use ? I used the Garmin Etrax Venture, and i borrowed the Scout PC's GPS unit to confirm, same reading on the MGRS.Originally posted by lwflee:Yes there is. It should be noted that civilian GPS units have a certain amount of inaccuracy built into them. Therefore, the SAF GPS unit will be better. Also note that the GPS unit needs Line of Sight to the satellite (and consequently the sky) in order to work properly. Therefore, you cannot navigate using only the GPS unit.
Lastly, i would not depend on the compass on the GPS unit. This is because the GPS unit only knows which direction you are moving in if it can actually track your movement. IE. Accuracy is affected by bad reception.
For singapore i think the settings are Kertau 1948" and something else. Can't remember.
Hmm - I did some reading on the net and apparently, the Inaccuracy was removed in 2000. Sorry, my bad.Originally posted by one-niner:spot on ...thats the one., the Datum also has to be changed, i can't remember.Actually the BSO of the Unit is incharge of the equipment, so i think u can ask him for the coordinates and the setting up. yup, as long bloody tells you the MGR, the mils, some info like ETA, distance to conver and covered and setting waypoints enough liow ...i don't regret the purchase of the GPS unit,u hardly got time to bloody program the unit, walk and play with it on the go ..Originally posted by lwflee:Hmm - I did some reading on the net and apparently, the Inaccuracy was removed in 2000. Anyway, i was using the Etrek/Etrax/Etrex??? Camo. It was the cheapest unit i could find.
not topo sure abt wat the US FOrces uses ...but i now the Garmin GPS 12 model has pretty fast network reception , similar to a handphone, once u on liow, you get the current location quickly, the Etrax model take abit longer to get the location.i nearly wanted to buy the GPS 12, but i think the size of it turned me off, its like a brick .....Originally posted by Temujin:Get the Etrex instead of the Gecko.
The SG MIL Garmin GPS 12 accuracy is the same as the civilian version.
Only some of the US forces have the most accurate and dedicated GPS reading.
What else can i say ?? I don't think the shops still sell the GPS 12 model ? or do they ? the Etrax is gd, small light and snudge fit ...it fits just nice into the SBO, or one of the Tanaka handphone pouch i bought for the purpose.think the topic should be renamed "Which GARMIN GPS to buy ?"Originally posted by Temujin:The Etrex is highly recommended as it uses two AA battery and longer life 22 hrs instead of the GPS 12XL as it uses four batteries and only 12 hrs, also has MGRS grid.
The 12XL is yesterday technology.

nolah..doubt so...nowadays so many things got gps...Originally posted by Kelvin_Seo:Hey, I would like to know more about the GPS system.
Is it possible for me to use it if I'm going to Msia ?
Any other additional fees ? Eg. for the device to get connected online or something like that ?

The GPS system is paid by the US taxpayer. You do not have to pay any money, just buy the GPS receiver and you are good to go.Originally posted by Kelvin_Seo:Hey, I would like to know more about the GPS system.
