UAV has its limitations. So does deploying scouts ahead and to the flanks of your marching column. You obviously have not been AMBUSHED badly on an open road while forced marching to a destination, even with good intel info given. I was.... It was humiliating. Column was "wiped out" by an equal strength enemy force.
Mobility on open terrain... most armies would be careful nowadays. The enemy can interdict by air or artillery. Only forced marches by large columns in recent times, were in the Falklands.... but this was because air superiority was in British hands and the Argentinians did not have the resouces to detect and interdict British lines. Even the Americans in Iraq did not force march troops but positioned them by helicopter or by protected truck convoys.
Near the FEBA, mobility will be achieved by helicopter or APC.
