Indonesia sends F16 jets to Malaysia border
JAKARTA (Indonesia) - Indonesia has sent four F-16 fighter jets to a disputed border region with Malaysia while President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono plans to visit the area that includes an offshore oil field both countries claim, officials said on Sunday.
The mix of saber rattling and diplomacy is the latest sign that tensions over the area in the Sulawesi Sea are rising between the two countries. Indonesia complained on Friday that four Malaysian military aircraft had violated its airspace in the area in the last 10 days, amid reports that Indonesia has deployed warships in the waters near the oil fields.
The International Court of Justice handed Malaysia sovereignty over the region's Sipadan and Ligitan islands in 2002.
But Indonesia claims Malaysia's water territory only extends 19km from the islands. However, Malaysia has awarded oil production sharing contracts to Royal Dutch/Shell Group in deep waters near the islands - a move protested by Indonesia.
Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono would visit the island of Sebatik along the border on Monday as part of a trip to East Kalimantan. -- AP -

What is 4 F-16 against 16 Mig 29? TNI cannot afford a fight unless all of a sudden, they want to get a whipping bt RMAF and be in the record book to be the first Viper killed by a Russian Mig?

They are posturing and perhaps trying to detract from domestic issues; not good for Asean and investor confidence. Hopefully, diplomats are working hard to defuse the situation.

The Mig 29s are not based near the region. they should be based in W. Malaysia.

Some Indonesians are calling for Konfrontasi 2 against Malaysia. Good opportunity for Malaysia to destroy Indonesia or facilitate the breaking up of this menace.
Maybe Singapore can be given a role to liberate the Rhio Islands under the 5 Power Defence Pact.

It is not in Singapore's interest for Indonesia to break up. If they do all our investments and treaties will be nullified.
Worst still, if you think it's difficult dealing with one large southern neighbour now, I can assure you, it'll be much more difficult dealing with 20 over smaller Indonesias if it breaks up.
The worst scenario will be if Indonesia destabilises rapidly. In which case all outcomes would be bad for Singapore. Outcomes will include:
1) Rise of militant islam in remnants of Indonesia
2) Lawlessness or Anarchy leading to increase in terrorism and piracy along the Singapore Straits.
3) Civil War which could be disastrous for invester confidence throughout the region.
Our southern neighbour might be big and it might be threatening at times but at least it's still quite stable and it's leaders are still relatively rational. -
