Because we have sufficient numbers of male soldiers to field the SAF.
In Israel, for instance, women have to serve national service, albeit for a shorter period and usually for non-combat vocations. In WW2, British women were conscripted to take over work left by men who had to go to war.
Let's hope the day will never come when our womenfolks are also called upon to do NS. When survival is at stake, we may have to do whatever it takes, including fielding women into battle. -

do u think a average female can carry a m16/SAR21, SBO with 2 full water bottle, 5kg fieldpack and helmet? and route march 24km through heat and rain? -
i think i'm more comfortable with it being all guys.
ladies provide inconvenience during operations. and i dun mean that in a sexual way... we gotta do things like have rooms specially for them, cater to their needs, blah blah blah...
i think think its easier for the commanders higher up to have pieces to move around when they feel like it, instead of those special ones which can move only a certain way. -

Hmmmz.actually to be frank with all the hype about women wanting equal status and as men...why not let them enlist into National Service?Let them do what the Israels are doing..the women can take up less combative roles like defending key civil installations like Changi airport etc with their male counterparts...to lessen the man-power burden.so that more of our men can be deployed at places like the Immigration checkpoints at Tuas and Woodlands,seaports etc...
Just my 2cents worth...and since women want equal status in society,i say to hell with the women's charter.

Did anyone heard about the father, of previous 3 daughters, asked the Pentagon to stop the posting of his remaining 2 daughters to Iraq after the death of 1 daughter?
Before women are made to serve in the military, a government must be sure that the public is ready to see in the media & accept the the fact that their daughters being shown as a POW or getting beheaded is a reality of being a soldier.
The matter of female in U.S military is still an open debate. Women make up about 15 percent of the U.S. Armed Forces. Since 1994, most jobs in the military have been open to women, including combat aircraft and combat ships. The chief exceptions are submarines in the Navy; artillery, infantry, tanks and combat engineers in the Army and Marines; and special forces. -

maybe you talk of 24km route march in SBO (skeleton battle order) instead of FBO (full battle order). Seems everyone always misidentifies webbing with SBO (somewhere along line SOP got mixed up as SBO??) -

Well...it still has to be maintained that,if the women want equal status in society as men,they should be there taking a fair share of the killing and dying as men have been.Being raped,humilated,abused,killed is part and parcel of war.Its either the women folk accept the harsh brutal realities of war then can they ask for equal status.I mean,even if there is no war,at least the fact thay they have served NS is already a added bargaining chip for them in the women deserve equal status as men fight,and to further enhance their position,to hell with the women's charter...as I sure don't see any men's charter.
Besides...politicians and parents have to come to it and realise that casualities are to be expected in any sort of conflict,be it men or women.Though unacceptable,it is a unavoidable price of conflict.Thus,if women wanna attain equal status,let them serve NS,if need be,send them to war and to hell with the women's charter...it makes them fat with the sweat of men.. -
Thanks guys, I'm actually writing a paper related to this matter. But lots of you are missing one point and i can't fault u since it IS a military forum. National service can cover the 5 aspects of Total Defence. Why not make compulsory service for women and have them cover the other aspects? National service, which most of you might agree with me, helps to foster friendship and weaves and binds the interracial fabric of our country. Even though it isn't in a very apparent manner, there are certainly benefits of National Service.
Does anybody know what the government's OFFICIAL stand on women and National service is?

NS is already unpopular with about half of Singapores population. If there is NS for women, the whole of Singapore would be unhappy!
On issue of equality, IMO, women should do it too. Not neccessarily in military but nursing, teaching assistants etc, areas where Singapore needs contribution in. Not because these are less tough areas but because SOP for men in the military already established and there is little point in totally revamping it to include women.
Women not included in NS at all, IMO, is because Singapore is a conservative (some say MCP) society and basically there is enough guys to go around to do the job in theory.
However, the interesting thing to consider is that if women are roped into the military, because there is a surge in number of potential troops. can NS be shortened to 1 year? -
F.B, maybe you should get your research done through an OFFICIAL government spokesperson. When one talks of National Service, most can't help but relate it to the military as its the ultimate sacrifice anyone can contribute to his or her nation. As you can compare it with other countries that have National Service for women, its usually in the military. As for the other 5 aspects of Total Defence( whatever it maybe ), canyone can do it without having to put it as a National Service.

I can tell you for a fact that American parents, with sons & daughters currently in Iraq, are not sleeping well at night. They understand the reason for their children being over there as a soldier but they are still not willing to accept the probability of their child, irregardless of it being son or daughter, getting killed.
At every military funeral currently in the U.S, you'll hear these phase being repeated,"...the old should not have to be the ones burying the young..."
