What will happen to the 350+ AMX-13SM1 tanks when the new light tank turns operational? 1.Scrap them? That will be alot of scrap metal! 2.Sell them? Not likely,unless some 3rd world countries needs some old,cheap and in good working condition light tanks. 3.Give them away? Maybe can give to the Indonesians since they are still using the old version but also not likely because, why should we armed them with weapons which are originally acquired to defend ourselves against them,right? 4.Target practice? This is done in many other countries to handle their old armoured vehicles. 5. Displayed as monuments?
I personally think it will be a combination of option 1,4 and 5 due to the shere number. What do you think?

Are we replacing the AMX-13s? What are we going to replace it with? Pai seh ah, I haven't heard of anything like that...

It's supposed to be a joint venture between STK and United Defense Land Platforms...a Bionix hull with a M8 AGS chassis I think.Might have ATGMs too..It's somewhere around here...

2) Sell them - Indonesia/Philippines
3) Give them away - Indonesia/Phillipines/East Timor
4) Target practice - yes - scrap dealer after that (point 1)
5) Displayed - yes - give one to each new camp -

Three hulls : either M8 original hull, Bionix's hull or UCVP( Primus's hull).
And the turret will be either the original M8's 105mm gun turret or the later 120mm Thunderbolt turret.
Thus six options. -
Just thinking out loud here......
If they can somehow figure out how to remotely operate it, it'll make one hell of a target practise. A real moving target....

Yes,it is scrapped but there is an exhibit in the Asian Aerospace 2004. I saw the video at the exhibit,very impressive,so i think SAF should give it some serious consideration.I think it is a very bad idea for the US to scrapped the M8. But they seem to have solved this problem with the MGS(Mobile Gun System)variant of the Styker. It is the most heavily armed variant,it have a 105mm main gun,7.62 and .50-calibre machine guns. But I think it still can't be considered as a true blue light tank.

The light tank should be upgrade of existing Bionix 25 with 105mm turret. The turrets for the Bionix 25 transferred to the Ultra 40/50(possible?). The SM-1s gets fitted with OWS/Typhoon and given a new role - recce if it's still 3G relevant. Support roles like towing or deploying minefield line charge(?), instead of LWSH why not SMH, rocket launcher, APCs, SAM vehicles, I can think of many more, just not now.
The vehicles are there already[edit: and they are proven platforms with their capabilities or lack of it widely known.......you have ppl already trained to operate them as well]......why scrap them.....you can give them a smaller role in the ORBAT and let them wind down thru canabilisation etc. They can be like Shermans to the Israelis.
Still, there's a need to consolidate the number of vehicle platform types in SAF. -

I wonder if it's possible to package the 40/50 into a pallet for 1.5 to 3 tons truck or equivalent......so converting them into IFVs on wheels. -
This reminds me of the gun trucks. These trucks are actually modified normal transport trucks/jeeps/Hummers which are better armoured and armed so as to protect the convoy of other normal trucks. This is actually a very old idea which dates from the Vietnam era. They are armed with an assortment of weapons(mainly MG but somee have grenade launchers,even Gatling and AA guns!) on the platform behing the driver's cabin.

During WW 2 , the Germans used turrets from decommissioned tanks and fitted them onto concrete bunkers. Ended up as fixed gun emplacements. Which was not such a bad idea since at that time, there were no such thing as smart weapons (e.g. bunker busters or ATGW).
They were difficult to kill but easy to get close by infantry, because of the turret's limited all-round vision. However, you needed a shaped charge to kill the bunker.
If I 'm not mistaken, the idea of using turrets on bunkers was also adopted to a small degree by the Swiss and also the Syrians. But with ATGW and smart weapons, the idea of fixed gun emplacements is only good for limited situations. -
I think the Swedes have a 155mm howitzer turret for integration into 'pill boxes' or something underground to do coastline defence.......
Germans have one that can go on board ships.
They also have some for RBS15 missile launchers but mostly in mobile configuration rather than behind fortified structures. -
The Soviets have also done the same for their old tank turrets and even for their ex-battleship turrets! They turned them into weapons in stationary forteresses along their borders such as the one facing China. That happened in the Soviet era but not any more as these bunkers are obsolete. You can read about this in the Tom Clancy book;The Bear and The Dragon. (Btw the book is not up to standard,i prefer his old books much more,he seem to have lost his touch now.)
