Yep...there were two incidents...One was in 1986 if I'm not wrong...The Chaim Herzog (sp) case...the Israeli president visited SG much to the unhappiness of Malaysia...our ambassador to Malaysia was asked to leave (or recalled...I can't remember); its a grave political move. Malaysians were threatening to cut our water supply back then too...
The second incident was in 1991...the Malaysian-Indo combined exercise on our National Day...in JB as well...It was a mass para-drop by both forces, and the dropzone was pretty near our borders (considering it was in JB). The exercise was even called "Total Wipeout" (in Malay). SG naturally protested this act...SAF was mobilized...but not fully...half of our reserves and all our active NSFs...it was to send a political message of deterrence to them...
The SAF doctrine is one of combined-arms mobile warfare; i.e. pre-emptive strikes, stressing the use of airpower, naval power and of cos' armour, as our first decisive strike...It only makes sense...I would argue that there is more to just the Mersing Line...I've done a couple of stats calculations pitting them against us...won't tell u all the method lah, of cos'....not classified...just boring...
There is 1 more serious than what you had mentioned. The year was 1983, Sultan issue in Matland that it might end up civil war that swept to Sgp. SAF was ordered fully standby and all active or semi active units (even logistic base) were order to in REDCON within days, briefing was conducted to all unit regarding ammo & ration arrangement (the scenario was one button press, you had to bring what ever resource you had to collect what you could & fuck off the place asap without any verification), as for semi active unit (ROD leave or half strength was reservist) logistic arrangement such that troop come back, they straight go to their vehicle, start the engine & go (all weapon & SBO, etc.. all ready & lock inside the vehicles), live ammo shall be in the con area.
During the D day, was 1st time in SAF mobilized full brigade troop openly issue with weapon, by the way, live ammo was already drawn but not issue to the troop yet (of cause they did not know about it) & gun was pointing the direction. It was stand down till the Sultans give way at the dead line.
This is not a make up story.
