Yeah, its tough.
You learn to be full infantry and full armoured infantry. -
nah, not really....
infantry walk like never walk before, AI sit inside APC till butt pain. need not worry about water not enough, food not enough...

AI quite shiong because still need to debus from IFV when near objective to do fire movement. Then the Sec com and Veh com must know each others jobs. An AI officer need to learn about tank stuff as well. So lots of things to learn

fire movement come after a IA drill... hahaaa... no much to do oso. fire movement with just SBO as all equipment in the APC/IFV. hey, some Infantry and Guards do it with full pack on man.
siong when go back camp, need to clean up the APC... there is a saying that 1 day training is to 3 day maintenance... yah? or more.

yoz i am AI trooper from 41sar 6 years back sad to tell u it is very very very siong to be Ai trooper....to some it may be a comfort to be in a APC but the task and vocation allocation sux big time....me use to be in M-113 40/50,space for sitting great althought it is still cramp..but when reservist converted to Bx gawd dang the sitting is like fit for children age 12
anyway in national service there is no such thing known as relax for ur 2 years other then u PLP la just gritted ur teeth and endure through the 2 years ba..... take care and all the best!!!! -

some things that AI is different from Inf
- AI got tank, Inf got tonner
- tank lompang AI to obj, Inf walk to obj
- tank can lompang AI cross river, Inf "swim" across the river
- Inf walk approx > 10km per mission, bash here bash there
- Inf might not get resup if MSR / ASR not cleared
- Inf manpack everything they need in mission. (try manpack a f***ing jerrycan and MTC)
i might be wrong on some stuffs abt AI coz' I'm not AI. and though i think AI is slightly better than Inf, they do also have their siong stuffz, else they would'nt have won the best combat unit the other time -

There are pros and cons in different vocation.
During active time, half of my platoon was downgraded.......
Can it be use as a benchmark to measure the siong-ness????
Frankly, my reservist units consists of Lao Jiao from PDF x-trained to AI to top up our unit strength. 50% of my reservist platoon made up of lao jiao.
After training with them, initially they commented that AI more senang than Infantry as we got the following,
1) Before exercise start and after exercise cut, we got M113 to ferry us.
2) We can store additional ration in M113
3) While vehicle on the move, they quite senang as the driver/comanders are fighting for them.
However, they mentioned the following siong things as an AI
1) We got more stores to take care of and 1206 to sign.
2) We got more weapons to mount/dismount and clean. 40/50, MG/Co-ax(per sectioin)
3) As infantry, once exercise cut, they only need to take care of their own personal weapon and store. As an AI, we need to take care of signal set, optics, heavy weapons (40/50), MGs/Co-ax and stores.
During their first few armour ICT with us, they thought got M113 quite senang, ferry them here and there..........Mounted assualt on objective, dismount to clear enemies.....................
However, during our reservist ATEC, M113s were only used to ferry us to the admin point and laager point only......other than that, us AI were doing coastal hook from Scout camp to Area D, walk by foot to SAFTI live firing area, charge up E-shape knoll.....
After capturing the objectives, then the M113 shows up for defense and laager....
Guess only a true blue Armour trooper kia knows about the "usefulness" of the vechicle......................mrgreen:

If you wonder why armour regiments rarely take best combat unit. Its coz when we're accounting for ovm, they're taking ippt.

I agree that the life of the mechanics are tough. This is because as a tankie we are trained to be mechanic as well just that we learn less things. I can understand why they are not happy as they will have a feeling that they are "clearing the s**t" for the people who spoil the vehicle. It is after all not their fault that the vehicle are spolit. So I think we have to give them due credit even though they don't chiong in the field.
I wish to highlight the plight for fellow tankies here. As all of us know the SM1 is a very old machine. The original design dates from straight after WW2. We bought our tanks 2nd hand from other countries. Yes, even though it have been upgraded before it is still very old. Old things spoil easily. And if it is spolit in the field we have to remedied it ourselves (try fixing a throw track with 3 men!). The crew of a SM1 tank is only 3 as compared to the crew of a M113(7 men section +veh comdr + driver). I am not very sure on the actual number of people in the M113 but it is obvious that there is significantly more people allocated to each vehicle. Yes,I agree that we don't need to chiong and only provide cover when the troopers chiong to the objective during exercises. However, we spent significantly more time doing servicing per veh crew while back in camp. Singapore is one of the only few countries in the world which still operates the AMX-13 tanks. This means that the supply of spare parts are low,which in turn cause the signing of 1206 extra painful as the spare parts are very expensive(imagine shared by only 3 men!).
To be fair to our fellow AI troopers, I am not trying to compare whose job is more shiong here. Like I have said before, I am just letting the others know and try to understand the problems which the tankies have. Therefore I am looking forward to training in the new platform which replaces the SM1 during my ICT!
