Indonesia-a nuclear power?

The Indonesian government have just went to the IAEA of the UN to inform them of their intention to have nuclear power stations by 2015.The idea have been around since the Suharto era but it was never implemented due to strong protest.It is possible to make nuclear weapons from the nuclear waste, depending on the type of reactor they are planning to get. What are the implications of this decision to the future defence of Singapore? And how will it effect the SEA region and beyond?

they have so much oil and gas why would they need nuclear power ? Its just a guise for their nuke programme.

I'm not worried about them building a nuke...
I'm just worried if those people will accidently cause a nuclear meltdown.
If they build one nuclear power plant, we better go bomb it first. We are not pre-empting a weapon of mass destruction, we are pre-empting an accident of massive stupidity. -

Nuclear fission is not for Singapore.Any industrial accident will cause a huge catastrophe in our economic and social well-being.

Can anyone believe that the Indonesians have the capability to maintain the nuclear power station??
They cannot even manage their forest fires.......One fine day, they will make some silly mistake and a radioactive cloud will float towards Singapore......
This time it will not be the Haze....it would be Radiation.......all of you will become mutants, if you are still alive.........That is why Singapore and malaysia must stop the mad Indonesians from destroying this region.....and the way to stop them is to cause the breakup of Indonesia......let them fight amongst themselves...... -

Nuke plant depends on the type of fuel it uses, there is something called caramel which produces a lot of electricity but very minute amounts of weapons grade material not enough to make bombs and take decades to collect enough to make 1 bomb.
Caramel was offered by france to iraq once to test whether they were really interested in peaceful purposes or bomb making, but of course we know they rejected so the israeli's bomb the plant. -

IIRC, indonesian forest fires only became a significant problem after the downfall of Soeharto. Forest fires could not be eliminated but could be minimised.
Anyway, Indonesia is party to the non-proliferation treaty and none of their neighbours have any nuclear arms nor any intention to develop them. Hence, to start development of nuclear weapons in this region just do not make any sense.
They have also in the past indicated intention to develop peaceful use of nuclear energy. Due to their large population and declining reserves of oil and gas, it makes sense to develop alternative sources of energy. I don't believe there is any need to read too much into this.
IMO, we are more vulnerable due to ever increasing cost of fossil fuel and total dependence on imports. Further, we suffer from scarcity of land to develop alternative energy sources. For instance, where could we safely locate a nuclear plant if we had wanted to construct it?
There may be some concern only if the nuclear plants are located close by. In the event these are located close by, the Malaysians will also raise objection.

In my opinion, the possibility of Indonesia developing nuclear weapons after their power plants when ready is low. At least not in the next 30 years from now (assuming they start constructing straight away). I don't think they have the money,technology and political will to do so. I think they want nuclear power stations so that they will be less dependent on fossil fuels. The global resource of fossil fuels is being rapidly depleted by the ever-growing world population,therefore the only direction for the price of oil to go is up. They are doing this to save money in the long term.
However, that doesn't mean we must be complacent. We must be prepared for any possible threats. We should never be caught unprepared. We can start building up our nuclear warfare defence slowly (assuming we have not done so yet),similar to what we have done to prepare ourselves for chemical and biological warfare.
Anyway does anyone have any info on what form of defence Singaopore have against nuclear threats? Thanks.

i doubt that they have the funds and technology to do so, well, for now at least.
anyway even if they plan to build one, i think they'll face alot of opposition from the neighboring countries.
and if they start building, who knows? maybe our dear motherland will pre-emp? anyway, time to stock up on MOPP suits guys..

Come to think of it, I can't come up with a country that has survived a nuclear attack without massive loss of life.
Like I said, its not that we are afraid that they would build nuclear weapons. Its not cheap nor easy to do so. But its whether it would cause another chernobyl type incident or not. Plus, it would be placing fissile material within the grasp of rogue forces such as terrorists. A dirty bomb alone can cause quite a bit of damage.
