just concentrating on the army for now...Originally posted by specfore:Don't forget that they have paramilitary police forces. Some of the police units are highly trained and are (at least on paper ) the equivalent of our SOF. One such unit is called VAT 69. They were formed in 1969. Don't ask me what VAT stands for. When on holiday in Malaysia, I noticed some police units were "mechanised" ... they had something like the V-100 wheeled armoured vehicles, with GPMG mounted.
From the orbat ... it appears to me that they still retain the British influence ( e.g. Royal something.... and also the way they name their regiments).
Good jungle fighters and many senior officers and NCOs had experience fighting the commies in the border jungle areas in the 70s. Not sure about the younger troops though.

The Royal Ranger Regiment actually consists of infantry, mechanised infantry battalions and a single airborne infantry battalion.
The ranger title originates from the British colonial days. It is one of the regiments in the MAF that accepts non-Malays.

yeah...malaysia is headed by a monarch.....Originally posted by aerozapper:The Royal title does not have as much to do with the British.
It refers more to the fact that the Yang di Pertuan Agong, a.k.a Chief Sultan, is the titular head of state (like our president).

aiyah...life in singapore more ex....tats y they have to make the pay on par with private sector.......Originally posted by specfore:Don't think we can really compare their pay scales with ours. It was good education to see what pay they are getting... but can't really draw any meaningful conclusions.
SAF is kind of different. We have to attract the regulars who are supposed to provide the trainer cadre and the leadership to the NS men and reservists. So , the pay scales look very good in the SAF. Plus, the fact that S'pore is a high -cost economy, so purchasing power is also a factor.
What about reservists in SAF? Some of us are earning more than what our regular rank in the SAF would pay. If we compare this against their pay scales, can we really say that we are a high salaried armed forces?
well thats something new . . . .except if i were the malaysian gov then i wouldn't want to risk having a diplomatic showdown with the philipines by doing thatOriginally posted by Dr Who:Unofficial history (true ?):
In the 80s , some Filipino pirates raided a town in Sabah. The Malaysians quietly followed the pirates back to their home base. The MAF then landed quietly and shot up the whole island. All wew killed including women and children. All the bodies were disposed off. When the filipino officials investigated, there we no witnesses.
Peace reigned in the area.......for 20 years until the Abu sayaf gang emerged...lets see if the ASG gets their backsides shot away.
