Future of armour....

What do you think is the path armoured forces will take into the future? I have read about the new Isareli system where short-ranged, fast-moving projectiles can be destroyed when installed on existing armoured vehicles. There is also much talk in US about the future tank being armed with cannons which fire projectiles at very fast speeds without any propellant but by alternating magnetic fields. Do you guys seriously think that future armour forces will take the shape of Mechwarriors,Battletech,Gundam and Robotech? Please comment.

Reading the news these past 20 years one becomes very familiar with images of MBTs and APCs operating in urban areas.
Most cities have roads, tall buildings, drains, manholes, basements, lots of rubble and stuff to barricade etc.
Enemy can cordon off an entire area like the Jews did in the Jewish Getto battles of WW2. It took the Germans a long time to defeat the poorly-armed Jews because all their Blitzkreig-style warfare and equipment simply didn't work so well in the city.
Blackhawk Down movie showed yet another aspect of urban warfare. The US move into lightly armoured Humvees proved to be a huge mistake as speed proved to be a less useful factor than good armour.
Do you think current MBT and IFV are well-suited to urban fighting?
Or do you think urban fighting conditions demand a different breed of AFV? -
I think we do need a different breed of A vehicles for urban warfare. Just take a look at the Isarelis. Their A vehicles are certainly one of a kind and can't be found any where else in the world. This is due to the fact that they have been engaged in urban warfare for so long now and they have incoporate the experience learned into designing their vehicles.
Look at their new Merkeva MBT,they have weapons like mortars and even a compartment behind for troops. I am sure some of you must have seen pics of odd looking APCs modified from old M113 and other obsolete MBTs.
All these weird looking vehicles are specially designed for fighting in an urban environment. -

On a more realistic note, Gauss guns or electromagnetic guns are real... just that they are not yet practical due to factors such as cost, durability, utility etc...
Gauss guns fire tiny rounds by using electromagnetic coils to accelerate the projectile. The speed of these rounds are so fast that it can penetrate almost most surfaces, even concrete....

Portable nuclear reactors? Need so much power for the magnetic coils ?? I believed they can be easily powered by conventional fuel sources, just that those flimsy coils can be very easily damage plus the bullets themselves are very expensiveOriginally posted by Rockhound:yup yup...

I think the future of armor lies in very heavily armed infantry, akin to that in starship troopers. Cos in the first place, you need vehicles to transport those soldiers. Of course, no point transporting heavily-armoured troops inside if the vehicle itself isn't armoured.
I don't think armoured vehicles will ever become obsolete. They have been around since medieval times in the form of heavily-armoured knights mounted on horses. While infantry may be the queen of the battlefield doing all the dirty work, you will still need armour as a sucker punch to deal a knockout blow to the enemy. -

I thihnk that firepower would have increased by so much that numbers, speed and stealth will be paramount because there is no armor that can provide any meaningfull protection.

i don't think all future armored vehicles will remain very well grounded. imagine an apache firing the 75mm turret, it'd crash itself in an instant.
neither would legged tanks work, simply too impractical. tracks would still rule. a combination of both might work however, using feet to walk across terrain too harsh for even tracks, but then comes the problem of balancing. and you definitely can't fire while standing due to the high centre of gravity. -

You see to propel those projectiles you need a quick sudden burst of energy. So a stored form of energy or an engine to produce a huge surge in energy is needed. normal Internal combustion engines(ICE's) just dont have that.Originally posted by DriftingGuy:Portable nuclear reactors? Anyway there are portable nuclear batteries. The Russians used them for radar sites and air defence sites that are out of the way. Where building a power plant wld be to costly and building a power line inefficient.
Thing is you wont put a human within 5m of that thing even with a damn suit! -
