We are under political pressure to only defend ourselves. A move to buy an ATTACK plane will be seen as an aggressive move. The Super Hornet, F-15E and SU-30 are regarded as attack planes. Our policy has never been to fight a war while we still can control the situation. So, we mantain a "weaker" airforce when actually we make them better, faster and better mantained. On the point of our neighbours having aggressive aircrafts, Malaysia has 4 F-18Ds if I am not mistaken. Much of Indon's airforce is in disarray. They have a significant number of F-16s, but only a few are air-worthy. Personally, I feel the purchase of the SU-30 is a bad choice. Its most likely about face, I think.
A significant point to note is that the major powers may not allow us these aircrafts as we have no use for them. At least now. -

it's good tat we make planes better,faster and more well maintained tat our friends around us...but if worst come to worst and we get att...how???
making the planes better,faster and more well-mantained will definitely give us an advantage...but all it takes is overwhelming numbers and we're be realli swamped...
guess u should have also heard of tis:train for the worst...hope for the best
so getting a new airplane is realli tat much important...
case in point:hope MINDEF is listening....get the F-15...combat-proven,versatile and i tink bang for buck also

PARIS, April 18 (Reuters) - France's Dassault (AVMD.PA: Quote, Profile, Research) declined to comment on Monday on a newspaper report that it and Boeing (BA.N: Quote, Profile, Research) have both reached the final round of bidding for a $1 billion contract to provide combat jets to Singapore.
French newspaper La Tribune reported that Dassault and Boeing would be considered for the lucrative contract, but not Eurofighter, which the paper reported to be out of the race.
Officials at Dassault, which is bidding to sell its Rafale combat jet to Singapore, declined to comment and noone was immediately available at Eurofighter a consortium of top European defence firm BAE Systems (BA.L: Quote, Profile, Research) , Airbus parent EADS (EAD.PA: Quote, Profile, Research) and Alenia Aeronautica.
La Tribune quoted several sources close to the issue as saying that the island state, which wants to buy 20 combat jets, would announce its preferred bidder at the end of June or beginning of July with exclusive negotiations seen finalised at the end of the year or early 2006.
Aerospace officials say the outcome of the bidding for the widely watched Singapore contract is tough to call.
