risk the lives of 300 000 singaporeans? no thanks. Nah, its either USA/Taiwan or China...Originally posted by CenturionMBT:risk the lives of 300 000 singaporeans? no thanks. I am not going to fight such a war unless we are actually going to be attacked by an aggressor.
We will not fire the first shot. But let's just say that our shipping is attacked by the PLAN and they seize control of our waterways and attack CNB and the USN vessels there.Should we let them do that? NO.Originally posted by CenturionMBT:risk the lives of 300 000 singaporeans? no thanks. I am not going to fight such a war unless we are actually going to be attacked by an aggressor.
PLAN with its current modernization program will grow but will become a regional maritime power capable of active offshore defence at most. In the foreeable future, PLAN naval air arm, with its Su 27K Flanker, remains rather ineffective in engaging ships with modern air defence system. With its limited range it is no threat to even the sampan along the malacca straits or at the south china sea. Aircraft carrier remains in the discussion stage and projection of power would likely be carried out mainly by its submarine fleet. What has RSAF Eagles got to do with such a threat or no threat?Originally posted by LazerLordz:If there is a war in the Taiwan Straits, whoever owns the Straits will have a big influence on whether China gets her supplies.
I'd bet that in such an event, we might see PLAN warships trying to secure the Straits for their own purposes, thus possibly setting us Malay Archipelago states into a conflict with her.We are very tied into the fate of North Asia, if you look really hard enough into the political and military dimensions are work here, plus taking into account our relationship with the United States, which sees us as a vdery important forward logistics HQ in South and North Asia.
They are basing more troops and aircraft at Guam these days..And it's definitely due to the rising tension.
Take a look at our RSN's increasingly bluewater plans and strategy.Add in our air-to-air refueling capability, which only we have amongst our neighbours..throw in the fact that we are getting our Frigates anti-missile missile capability..
We're definitely trying to be a force capable of defending the Straits.Whoever the enemy might be...we won't know for sure..but I think if there is an external military threat to the Straits, I'd be glad to see RSAF Eagles and Vipers flying CAP alongside RMAF SU-30s and F/A-18E Super Hornets in the South China Sea
Hmm, I don't think we will proactively seek a confrontation, if that's what you think my post implied. But there is value in opening up the scope for looking at where future threats might come from. And the people whom we bicker with all the time might not turn out to be the most dangerous.Originally posted by sgdiehard:PLAN with its current modernization program will grow but will become a regional maritime power capable of active offshore defence at most. If there were a war in the Taiwan Straits, it will not be necessary for China to secure the straits of malacca, it will be for the US to control the straits to block supplies to China, but will Malaysia and Indonesia allow?? if China choose to start the war, would they not have sufficient supplies to pre-empt a possible naval blockage? US carrier task force will come from Japan or across the pacific, Malacca straits may not be that important for an immediate and direct conflict between the US and China.
If the US were prepared to go to war with china over taiwan, would singapore want to be involved, against China? Malaysia and Indonesia certainly do not view the threat of China the way some singaporeans view and they certainly do not fight war as allies of the US, I cannot see how RMAF planes could be flying along RSAF Eagles against Chinese planes.
Many countries would be affected by a war in the taiwan straits but how many want to be involved? Even against iraq, most countries in the world chose to stay out. Is it wise for Singapore to stand along side the US against China? for what? that is a question for politicians to think very very carefully. In the meantime, the RSAF should refrain from showing off.
SAF should continue to be modernized against direct threats to the existance of singapore , and our position in the international theatre should continue to be strengthened through sound foreign policies and international cooperations. Taking China as our perceived enemy is not a sound foreign policy and buying plane in anticipation of participation in a war 1000 miles away is rather far fetched.
If RSAF planes should one day be fighting against a SU-30, this SU-30 is not likely to be flown by a chinese pilot. I believe the guys in Mindef knows where our threats are likely to come from.
I am surprised and a little disappointed that Eurofighter is out of contention now. F-15 is still too old an aircraft. A newer aircraft from Europe can gain us access to the european technologies, training facilities and military doctrines.
if that is the case, we are hell in a dillema. It is all up to whom our gov is siding. Anyway, whoever we choose to side, we will still lose in the end. If i had it my way, i rather that our gov stands by its neutality and not side anybody in this war.Originally posted by SMAPLionHeart:Nah, its either USA/Taiwan or China...
Its either we let those ships pass through , if we let those ships pass through..we will be attacked by Chinese warships and fighter jets..
If we don't...USA/Taiwan will be very pissed off...cause a high % of their military assets are stationed at middle east and will be awaiting transport to the taiwan straits in the event of a conflict.

Agree, stay neutral, especially if the war is between China and USA. We cannot not help and we will not gain, but we have a lot to lose, during and after the war.Originally posted by CenturionMBT:if that is the case, we are hell in a dillema.
