Seriously sloping armour on both the hull and the turret just makes so much sense to help defeat projectiles.
Wonder why so few modern MBT are built like that?
The Abrams turret have somewhat flatter vertical sides. I'm sure the Abrams have thicker, more fancy armour than the Merkava. But the Abrams is a huge tank and a huge fuel guzzler. I feel the Israelis must know a little bit more about modern tank design than the Americans since they have fought more tank battles in recent times than anyone else has on this planet. -
wish we have one of these beauties; if only they are lighter & narrower.

The Merkeva is one of the most good-looking MBTs in the world. It is my favourite looking MBT. The Isarelis also developed a heavily armoured APC(Namera) using the chasis of the older Merkava Mk 1 & 2.

Yes, its a pretty intimidating tank... If i saw that in war, i would probably cream or shi t pants, depending on who the tank belongs to.

Does anyone knows wat those chain with ball baring located behind the turret are for? does it protect the tanks or a lucky charm? dunno how mk4 perform over mk3 baz. hope i can drive one of these which is impossible.

TEL AVIV — For the first time in their more than 16-month-old war, Palestinian insurgents succeeded in destroying an Israeli tank regarded as the best protected in the world.
Palestinian insurgents blew up the Merkava Mk-3 tank in the Gaza Strip. Three of the tank's four-member crew were killed in a landmine attack on late Thursday that destroyed the vehicle. The remaining member was lightly injured.
Military sources and analysts said the Palestinian attack marked a watershed in the insurgency war with Israel. They said the Palestinian Authority and its militia allies had been trying for more than a year to develop a mine powerful enough to destroy the Merkava. The sources said the mine contained unidentified explosives never used before in the West Bank and Gaza Strip.
Palestinians succeeded in destroying the first Merkava tank by exploiting the vulnerability of its undercarriage, the sole area not protected by armor. The Hizbullah, which has provided technical expertise to the Palestinians, managed to disable but not destroy a Merkava tank during the Israeli deployment in southern Lebanon.
The attack began with an explosion near an Israeli armored bus near the Jewish settlement of Netsarim. The Merkava tank was summoned to the scene and was destroyed by a second mine.
