Despite what the former DGSE claimed in his memoir, the fact remains that the DGSE did not carry out any killing during that World Cup.

And DGSE's record for such covert job hasn't been very clean, thats why they focus their killings more in Algeria. Oh! I almost forgot that they( the whole French military ) also screwed up a recent U.N peacekeeping mission & ended up demanding the U.S to clean up their mess.

But with regards to assassinations, its not always as easy as walking up to the target & shooting him at point blank. When a government approved an assassination, government assassins don't usually hit the wrong target as the evidences to justify the kill is usually gathered & presented to the designated government bodies for approval.

Usually government sanction kills are for targets that can't be brought before a court of law either because the target is in a country that protects him/her or the evidences against the target isn't strong enough to bring before a court of law, etc. But as the target is considered a clear & present danger, the last option is to assassinate the target.

I may be wrong but the most successful assassination during the 70s to the 90s are from either the former USSR, Israel & the U.K.
