I don't noe the authenticity of the contents or the credibility of the contents of the website u posted. but the sentence i highlighted in red is pretty biased and unwarrented for. I would take the sentence meaning that other than Taiwan there is a counry called Singapore, whose though has has a first rate military force, but due to our ethic chinese majority, were are just No Action Talk Only.Originally posted by 84mmrr:A website that mentioned Taiwan's plan to convert their Army from conscription based to professionals. So, what is the standard of our reservist trainings as compared to other ASEAN nation's Armed forces that are mostly professional soldiers?

January 24, 2005: Taiwan is converting its armed forces to an all-volunteer force. Noting the success of other all-volunteer forces (especially the U.S. and UK), and being able to afford this approach, the conversion will take up to a decade.
Some conscription will be retained, mainly to support a reserve force. The reserve troops would be needed if China every tried to invade. Within three years, sixty percent of all troops will be career professionals. By 2008, conscripts will only have to serve one year of active duty. Currently, conscripts serve 33 months, and are paid only $173 a month. Professionals get an average $1,100 a month. The armed forces has found that many military skills take longer than 33 months to obtain. Even skills that can be obtained within 33 months, get better the longer the troops serve. For a long time, Taiwan has been urged by the United States to upgrade the quality of its troops.
With China rapidly upgrading its forces, and the success of U.S. troops in the last two decades, Taiwan has finally been convinced. It remains to be seen if Taiwan can carry out this plan. On the bright side, there is the example of Singapore, a Chinese nation that has created a first rate military force. On the down side, there is centuries of Chinese experience with peace time military plans that produce grand ideas, but inept troops.

haa..well ...he has a club to maintain dude, so he has better things to do ..But i still find the words i highlighted in red offensive and baised from the article's writer.Originally posted by Obersturmfuhrer:It can't be helped that many people are ingrates who never appreciate the jobs others do. you forgot the recent incident where malaysia forcefully sent warships into brunean waters for undersea oil exploration.Originally posted by SMAPLionHeart:Being a chinese state , good meh? Almost 1/2 of the youths in singapore spend 2 years of their lives sacrificing for the nation.
Not to mention ,if we were of a malay race, we could be just like Brunei...saving billions of dollars on the armed forces even though 300,000 people..can live peacefully...
Anyone agree with me? We wouldn't have stucked out like a sore thumb..
their armed forces is so smallOriginally posted by one-niner:Down Under
Trying to dig up negatives to say about the Australian defence forces makes absolutely no contribution to one-niner's argument.Originally posted by crazy monkey:their armed forces is so small
how do u noe their armed forces is small ? Rememeber the initial post was abt professional troops having better positive attitude and training and being armed than a conscript force.Originally posted by crazy monkey:their armed forces is so small
I know, But Brunei has their own navy as well..Originally posted by nismoS132:you forgot the recent incident where malaysia forcefully sent warships into brunean waters for undersea oil exploration.
Thats also because Brunei has oil resources..basically if don't have any natural resources...nobody will bother invading..Originally posted by nismoS132:you forgot the recent incident where malaysia forcefully sent warships into brunean waters for undersea oil exploration.
It's true tht we can't compare an orange with an apple. But as a deterent force, we have to be as good if not, better than those professionals. Else, all our efforts serving NS and ICTs will be in vain.Originally posted by one-niner:With regards to the professional and conscript question.me and Gedekan did have a small PM session regarding such a force. I agree with him that a professional army standard is higher. The level of training and focus can be greater as the soldier is bonded by the army's demands and policies. Being a volunteer, he has a positivie thinking and motivated to begin with. Not some negative NS is bullsxxt, crap kinda of nosenses. in a nut shell u can't compare an orange with an apple.
The Australian SAS will whip your ass anyday..Small but packs more punch. We could learn from them.Originally posted by one-niner:how do u noe their armed forces is small ? Unless your trying to be one of the locals over in the place i'm studing who ask rather silly questions...No matter whether your a conscript trained soldier or professional soldier.the very fact that you are trained as a human being capable of killing another human being in the face of combat is one duty that not all men aspire to do or not all men have the privellage of doing back in their country.
Be proud to wear the beret of ur formation if ur done your NSF and not cast it off as some National Slavery, as when the war starts, its your loved ones that your protecting.
Hell, don't even talk about their SAS - even their commando battalion, 4RAR pack quite a punch. certainly they are far better equipped compared to our own 1/10 CDO BN. well trained, too. In addition, they also have what they call Tactical Assault Groups, one based in the east and one in the west. You could probably compare these to our SOF. then of course there's their SASR as well.Originally posted by LazerLordz:The Australian SAS will whip your ass anyday..Small but packs more punch. We could learn from them.
Well exchange programmes happens all the time. Like quivalen said below, their 4RAR are well trained.Originally posted by LazerLordz:The Australian SAS will whip your ass anyday..Small but packs more punch. We could learn from them.
Kuwait people are oil rich and wealthy..thats why....Originally posted by one-niner:Well exchange programmes happens all the time. Like quivalen said below, their 4RAR are well trained.
Like i posted earlier, u just can't compare a regular Army to a conscript army. Its human nature that forcing someone to do stuff they don't like will just meet resistance to a certain extent, be it physical or mentally (usally mentally, the chao keng)
But let us be thankful there is still a SAF present. if not we would have landed up like Kuwait. And i might not be posting this today![]()
