Section/Platoon Fire Power.

so any more "ways" that guys in here, more so for officer level. anyone have better way of deploying platoon weapons system to get the max used of each weapon which was not taught at all.
be it in defend, attck, assault, delay, withdraw... be it in BUA or not.
or just as what i say, ppl just follow the handbook without thinking of any other better ways or the instructors in school die die say you must do this.
so far i had give 2 types of diff weapon combine.
1. 2 X SAW with 1 X M203.
2. 1 X LAW/SS with 1 X M203.
handbook dun teach any of that and I think it better than what was taught to me and my man. and I had 'proven' so and teach them to my sect comd and man during my service time.
anyone give a go for the delay deployment? diff from withdraw (with pressure and without?). -
no one think at all? no one ever put himself as the enemy what he will do during an attack?
this is to share and help those to think, whatever was taught will work but not all the time and for sure are not the best in some ways.
for those who had met me 1st ATEC/OPFOR, know very well what 'we' can do. how weapon was use to the max it can give.
with the weapons the SAF have in a rifle coy. it will be useless if it not deploy to max it cap. such as effective range, rate of fire etc. -
just to bring out some points where i had come across many a time. and to let all keep thinking...
during ATEC, both side will have umpire with them. there is this 1 time(in taiwan) where i was task to be an O/FP. i had a section plus (OPFOR) together with GPMG and my section LMG on high ground looking over a river bed. distance 800m.
the ATEC ex. troop appear on the river bed with Coy strength. this 'good' umpire come to me and tell me that if i start firing my MMG for 5min i will cause them 1 casualty. i was like wtf.
i call in arty, take a smoke and wait... coy fast re-org after arty and carry on moving.(it was a very open area) they still have not spot my position yet. once near in 600m. i start to engage the Coy minus (due to the arty earlier.)
btw, OPFOR are using/simulate small arm of 7.62mm.
that it... the coy was like sitting duck right below me on the river bed. 600m away from me, other than the GPMG and 84mmRR there is nothing much that they can hit me with. (for ex. play, in real life i will take them out at 650m or even more if i can.)
with fire movement back to my final positions. the last man from that coy just manage to touch the bottom of my final position and it was game over for that coy.
there is no fire support for that coy at all which later i find out from the OC (he is my Coy 2IC in my last unit) his CO had told him to capture my position on his own without and fire support? wtf? just for that mission the BN fail. -

Your OPFOR mission sounded like one I participated in Taiwan, where I was part of an OPFOR section. But this goes back to 1984 or so.
COY strength enemy moving along a road, was to be harrassed with small arms fire by OPFOR section plus concealed on a ridge, about 100 m (but straight line distance to road was possibly 200 m or so ) above this narrow road. COY had no fire support but had to mount an immediate flanking assault in order to drive us away from the ridge. The easiest and most accesible assault route was up a very narrow track on one side of the hill, which in real life would either be partly mined or have an OP with MG sited down it , to harrass the approaching flanking troops.
Anyway, this was a training mission to test the basic coordination elements and command of the OC leading the COY. To make it a textbook simple immediate assault....
The umpires did not want to complicate matters for the trainees by introducing fire support or whatever complicated scenario (such as the OP I mentioned) . -

the thing is do we need one more Coy Support Weapon? As with just 84mmRR, i saw and feel it just not enough. takes time to get in position. take note of black blast, heavy weight at 16.1kg, need 2 pax to operate. -
At the end of the day, as a small unit commander (Section, PL, COY level), we have to learn to make do with only the normal PL and COY level weapons (or less) . Remember "Band of Brothers".... The 82nd and 101st Airborne were scattered all over Normandy. But they still had to form ad-hoc groups (with less men and missing equipment/ weapons) to mount their assault missions. One famous incident, which became a textbook case study by West Point cadets, was the deliberate assault on the German gun position at Brecourt Manor. Section plus assault group attacking a 50+ man entrenched position with 3 105mm howitzers.
No fire support... just small arms harassing fire, while the 8 or 9 guys made the dash towards the prepared position of the Germans. -
