Headline: Catch the newest war machines at NDP

HOMING IN : The Mechanised Igla, with its bin-shaped radar and self-propelled
anti-aircraft missiles, will be on display for the first time in the Mobile Column.
SINGAPORE'S newest military machines will make their debut at this year's
National Day Parade (NDP)..................
Among the mighty war machines is an armoured vehicle topped with four
missiles and a machine gun.
It's the pride of the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF), which says the machine
can swiftly down low-flying planes and helicopters.
Called the Mechanised Igla, it is used by the Republic of Singapore Air
Force (RSAF) to shield SAF units against enemy air attacks.
Other new weapons and equipment that will be in the Mobile Column include a 155mm self-propelled artillery gun, and the latest police cars and fire
engines.
They will begin moving towards the Padang just before 7pm.
The sharp end of the Mechanised Igla is its Russian-designed Igla missiles -
igla being Russian for 'needle'.
These have a needle-like nose containing sensors which home in on heat from aircraft or helicopter engines.
Igla missiles can destroy aerial intruders up to 5km away, and flying at a
height of 3km.
Each vehicle also carries a 7.62mm machine gun for self-defence against
enemy troops.
The two Mechanised Iglas will form part of the Mobile Column of SAF, police
and civil defence vehicles taking part in the parade.

The RSAF uses two versions of the Mechanised Igla and both will be on show at today's parade.
One has a cylindrical-shaped bin that houses a radar and the other does not have this sensor.
The Defence Ministry said the radar-equipped vehicle will send information
on air threats to other vehicles electronically, which helps missile operators
know which direction hostile planes and choppers are coming from, and thus
improve their threat awareness.
Colonel Woo Yew Chung, Commander of the 8th Singapore Armoured Brigade which organised the Mobile Column, said the column stretches some 2km from front to back and would need up to 45 minutes to walk from one end to another.

Would love to see more vehicles and other hardware and troops. Dancing girls and PAP contingent no need.
