hmm... are ALL PRC units so "hi-tech" and professional looking???

As you can see in the pics I posted, not ALL the units look hi-tech and professional - by western standards.
But of all the PLA and Armed Police units I saw in China from HK all the way to Tibet, one thing is very significant is the level of discipline they project. They are well-behaved in public and take their duties very seriously.
Maybe some would find this hard to believe especially after Tiananmen but nearly all Chinese people I know think very highly of the PLA. The fact that the poor troopers often had to risk their necks in disaster rescue and relieve efforts probably contribute to this. PLA also provide free medical care to poor people especially in the countryside.
One of my travelling companion from HK was on the receving end of such kindness when she fell ill in Tibet.
Was it propaganda? - you bet, but very highly-appreciated at that time.
I would say the PLA is disciplined and professional as a whole - but a lot of old communist-style equipment and weapons around. They also have a lot of practices western-minded people do not understand.
Interesting Note:
Bribing is a common in all aspect of life in China and PLA is no different. But I'm sure ppl from SG will find this incredulous: While in SG some parents find ways to help their sons dodge enlistment, in China some parents pay a bribe to help make sure their sons get enlisted by the PLA or Armed Police. -
The chick in front of the tank seems to be carrying a Type-81 rifle. Hmmm. Not fully modernised yet? Heh.

As a matter of fact, the early version QGF02 PLA helmet is already start using non-metallic materials, the weight of QGF02 is 1.25kg compared to at least 1.5 kg of PASGT. I don't have the QGF03's figure in hand, but since it's made of nylon reinforeced resin/fibre glass/ aramid fiber mixture, it'll not be very heavy.

I had not meant that the lower price had a direct relationship with the quality of the good. Of course, that is commonly perceived. -
I don't think the PASGT is 1.5 kg. I've looked at some figures. The local helmet is rated at V50 442m/s and weighs about 1.25kg. They put in quite a bit of junk in there to stiffen it up... Thanks for the head's up of the QGF02 weight. I came across the Norwegian requirement. They were rated at V50 647 and they weigh in at around 1.05 kg. -

But actually, city boys from Beijing and Shanghai are NOT drafted into the PLA at all, though they can volunteer. Or they may be drafted because they have s degree in some area the PLA needs like medicine or engineering. The other thing is that not EVERY country boy get drafted. Therefore those who wants to make sure their sons get in or get into a cushy job would resort to bribing.
It is true that many country parents feel that the PLA will be a good place for their sons to learn some discipline, grow up to be a man, and secure a better future.
One of my company's driver was a driver in the army. He was from the countryside ut his duties took him to the Embassy districts of Beijing. Can you imagine what a whole new world is opened to him!
Afterwards, he left the service and joined our company as a driver. Then he moved o to yet another job driving for the CEO of some big corporation.'
Yeah, man - he moved on quite far. From a army salary of maybe RMB400 (SGD80) a month he's now probably paid up to RMB3,000 (SGD600) a month. -
