My guess is ex-Swedish navy's coz only 3 subs of this class were produced. And yes, it makes good sense to purchase submarines as they are potent adversaries and require less manpower as compared to surface fleets.Originally posted by bmwf1kin:so, did we bought new subs or ex-swedish navy's subs

All along we know that we will get the two subs from Sweden.
BUT the big question is are we getting SODERMANDLAND(1989) and OSTERGOTLAND (1990), both AIP equipped and in Swedish active service;
or are we getting the VASTERGOTLAND(1987) and HALSINGLAND(198, which are both sitting in a dockyard in reserve and not AIP equipped.
The deal is only one billion Kroners, is it possible that AIP subs are so cheap? [/b]
Submarines equipped with Stirling AIP systems can expand the submerged endurance, thus avoiding to expose its position. This enables the Stirling AIP submarine to counter the threat scenario much more effectively compared to a conventional diesel-electric submarine.---2005-07-11

The systems offers an alternative to battery power, which in turn means less frequent requirements for noisy battery recharging, with the diesel generators.
Instead of a number of days, a Stirling AIP submarine can extend the time submerged to weeks and thus outperform any other conventional submarine with regard to that key capability - submerged endurance.
Outstanding advantages
The main feature of the Kockums air independent propulsion (AIP) system is the use of Stirling engines burning pure oxygen and diesel fuel in a pressurized combustion chamber.
The combustion pressure is higher than the surrounding seawater pressure, thereby allowing the exhaust products, dissolved in seawater, to be discharged overboard without using a compressor.
Oxygen is stored in liquid form (LOX) in cryogenic tanks. Submerged endurance is primarily determined by the amount of stored LOX.

In addition to the Stirling AIP, the Sodermanland submarines have been fitted to undertake missions in warmer and more saline waters than those surrounding Sweden. This goal has been achieved replacing the refrigeration system by an entirely new one.
more on AIP
Only Sodermanland--1989.and Ostergotland--1990 are in active service.
The Ostergotland submarine equipped with Stirling AIP-air independent propulsion system was delivered to the Swedish Navy in October 2004.

Kockums receives Singapore order to two submarines
Kockums, which is part of ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems, has signed a contract with Singapore’s Ministry of Defence to supply two Västergötland-class submarines to the Republic of Singapore Navy.
Currently in service with the Royal Swedish Navy (RSwN), the submarines will be transferred to Singapore on completion of the modernization and conversion for operation in tropical waters. The contract also includes a logistics package and training for the crews. Training will be conducted by the Swedish Navy in Karlskrona, along the lines adopted in conjunction with a previous order for submarines for Singapore.
- Kockums has a valuable relationship with Singapore, having previously supplied Mine hunters and the current Challenger-class submarines to the Singapore Navy. We are naturally delighted and honoured to be entrusted with supplying the two submarines to Singapore. I am confident that the two Västergötland-class submarines, when handed over, will enhance the Singapore Navy’s submarine capability, says Kockums´ CEO Martin Hagbyhn, commenting on the news.
Kockums, which has an office in Singapore, has supplied submarines, mine hunters (MCMVs) and mine-clearance systems to the Republic of Singapore Navy (RSN) since 1991.

They might just shove them under the Challenger class..makes no sense to makea new class for 2 subs.Unless, they plan to buy more Sodermanland subs..Originally posted by rascallyun:I wonder what class will they be renamed to in Sgp. Any guesses?
