Performance of the AIP system has been increased with two Siemens PEM fuel cells which produce 120kW per module and will give the submarine an underwater endurance of two weeks. -

The convertion from conventional sub to AIP sub take 1-2 years at least for the hardware potion of the project. The entire engineering project is technically challenging as any misalignment on the welding joints will affect the acoustic signature of the sub.

Due to a modernization program applied to the remaining boats the class has been re-named Sodermanland. The Sodermanland class submarines have a stretched hull compared to Vastergotland class among other improvements.

anyway without any official report, it will forever be only speculations.
IMO, our incoming submarines are bound to fitted with AIP. As our armed force always mention COST SAVING.
AIP system has a low acquisition cost and a low life-cycle cost. -

What about the bridge ops? How do they communicate with each other onboard? Target designation etc?
Eg, US Subs, they'd like "Conn, sonar, new contact bearing 239. Designated as sierra 11." any diff ops on brit boats?
Btw, our sonar displays is it like the US "waterfall" display, or is it more like the radial 360 types, where u have to look for a peak in the wave.
I've always figured the waterfall display to be more useful since u can "see" quieter stuff. -

It's depends on how ur combat system is being designed....it can be alfa, bravo, charlie...etc or...101,201,301.....anyway the sub sonar console is in the control room...so it's stupid to shout conn, sonar...it's more of....OOW, Sonar....new Sonar contact bearing XXX, classified as XXX designate as XXX.....i remember a joke from the sonar operator...OOW Sonar....new Sonar Contact bearing XXX, classified as Biological...must be a new type of whale...humping whale...so damn horny...hahaha

Biological is very common here in SCS....from snapping shrimps, whales, dolphins...rememer even there's knocking on the hull...tot we knock into something...in the end...can only conclude it must be either doplhin or whale...trying to check us out or hump our poor sub....

Does active sonar frighten them away? Cos some tree huggers in the US were complaining that US Subs active sonar had adverse effects on marine life.
Used to play some submarine sims... really really... tested my patience MAX. Especially when they asked u to search the area for a diesel boat. It takes almost hours to pick up anything on the sonar. And biologics and some strange anomalies in the water can leave me chasing ghosts sometimes. Really annoying stuff after a while. I'd eventually get pissed off, launch a USV to what I think is the possible target and active ping it from the USV. Of course, I'd fail the sub-objective about not getting counter-detected. -
Using active sonar is a taboo to submarines....we use it unless we r in deep shit such as DISSUB situation.

Not that bad when u ping with a USV. Since the USV would be deployed to a location and low-speed settings to a position far from the submarine itself.
Chances are the other sub would snapshot at the USV, while the Submarine itself would have an accurate solution fed back from the USV.
Its really cool stuff when its actually pulled off, but unfortunately it doesnt work everytime. So one thing to make the chances of it working was actually to launch the torps first, swim it out at low -speed settings. Fan them out abit, so they can approach from both flanks. Active ping from USV, kick the Adcaps into active, cut the wires, and make a run for it.
And since I don't really know if I'm actually shooting at the correct enemy sub or not until I active ping and hopefully hear it start running, the Save and Load option comes REALLY handy. Hahha.
